Adding Petrol Stations

Post by
Today, Waze released a new version of the WME which allows editors to define gas stations.
Once we have enough of them (70-80%), they will enable the gas price feature in the client.

So, we need to get cracking and map our petrol stations! Waze have given us a head start by importing BP and Esso stations, though they may need tidying up. There are some new guidelines in the Wiki for adding petrol stations.

I suggest we start with motorway service stations, and major towns.

Also, if anyone knows of a rights free database of petrol stations, we can pass this on to Waze for importing.

Hi,

They want us to do this whilst still getting:

Hi,

If we're looking for a common naming convention then I would suggest the name and "Petrol" or "Garage" or "Fuel".
So Sainsburys Fuel, Tescos Fuel, Shell Fuel etc.

One has to ask why Waze were not able to change the "Gas" field in the database. It is a pretty much unique term to the US. Particularly as we have, I assume, a separate db to the us being on the "world" servers.

Hi,

It would be worth having an "Independent" option. But then quite a few of the Shell and BP stations are actually "independent" although selling branded fuel.

Hi,

I have noticed a few small squares popping up in areas I manage which appear to almost exactly correspond to the locations of petrol stations!

These landmarks do not follow the guidance for adding petrol stations but do point them out conveniently...

Not created by a user either but I suspect an import from Bing or such..

Hi,

One I can't recall, the other a tesco express come esso station.
Although google list it as both that and texaco (but it may have been that previously).

Hi,

Sounds like exactly what happened when they imported that base map.

Waze doing what waze does best!

Those I added have missing phone and address details.. Typical!

Where is your area?

A good source of reference is Yell, in that it presents a nice map to help you find the station, and gives you the name, phone # and address. It's not perfect but it's there:

For instance Googling "Yell petrol stations Lincoln" give you:
http://www.yell.com/s/petrol+stations-lincoln.html

Click on the map in to top right and you get this page:
http://www.yell.com/maps/MapAction.do?k ... on=lincoln

Prior to the general release in WME I'd already done Lincoln and Newark using Yell for my research (backed up a by a few other sources), there are some missing from this but it would allow us to hit 70%!

[Edit: or you could even look in your Yellow Pages!]

I've sent a request to Waze asking for an "Independent" brand to be created or for them to clarify that in this situation we should leave the brand field blank.
