MapRaid - Russia

Post by a2bpdq
Enjoy editing? You'll love MapRaid!

The first MapRaid of 2018 has just been announced and will be in Russia:
Two weeks of non-stop editing fun
  • starting Sunday 18th February 2018 and
  • ending Monday 5th March 2018
Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of rank or experience.

Book your place - Join here Google Docs Russia MapRaid Application Form

Read more about the MapRaid here
It's a great way to get more editing experience and learn skills that can be used back home. You will also encounter editors from all around the world, but fortunately for us, the official language used between editors will be English. It's a great sense of international collaboration.

Editors will be grouped into teams with a mixture of ranks and each team is assigned an area to work in. You will temporarily be given full editing rights for the area. You'll probably start with an area in which almost no roads are marked. You will need to carefully examine the area using satellite view and decide what is a road, what is a stream and what is a goat track, then mark the roads and join them together to form the road network.

By the end of the Map Raid you will have experienced creating new roads, creating junctions, selecting road types, naming roads and naming cities, adding speed limits, dual-carriageways, one-way streets and so on, but you'll also glean a little about the way of life and the culture in rural Russia. It may even feel like you've had a bit of a holiday abroad.

Finally, you will have helped the people of Russia and visitors to Russia to navigate territory where there currently may be no street maps or road atlases at all.
The primary communication platform for the MapRaid will be Discord and everyone taking part must make a Discord account with the same username as their Waze username. It's free.

Create a Discord Account and Invitation to Waze Global & MR Server

You'll also need a Gmail account. It's free.

Create a Gmail account (if you don't have one or don't wish to use your existing one)

There's a MapRaid forum too: Mega MapRaid! RUSSIA

Any questions? Please post a reply here or direct message me.

Hope to see you there!

There are a lot of Russian car crash videos on YouTube because there are a lot of Russian drivers with dash cams these days. It's all relative.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance. - Terry Pratchett, Equal Rites.

I still have to get the hang of Discord, there are so many channels on the Waze group. And I seem to get tagged a lot by a user called Orbitc, to be assigned or something...? Not sure (yet) what that is about.

Ah, cool! *waves back* I'm in GeekDriverPeaceful's mentor group (figured it might come in useful as a first time raider), but it's nice to bump into familiar hard-hats!

Another"wave"if I may, from a humble L2, joining the elevated ranks in Volgograd.
I got lost in the vast rural areas of Botswana; hoping that this one proves more amenable.

Seeing the number of YouTube videos on car crashes in Russia, it would appear that very few Russian drivers actually stick to speed limits, turn instructions or lanes. Perhaps we're adding these for the benefit of the tourists ;)

Add this to fairly poor aerial images and all place and road names in Russian, I think we are going to be kept busy. :D
Where can local driving laws such as the above stated be gained from? Also national speed limits and other useful information?

When you say places and road names in Russian, are you referring to their alphabet or just language?

I've signed up and looking forward to it.
