Would it be possible for WAZE to have a CDL-A GPS version? Meaning the system would avoid low bridges and restricted routes and bridges?

well tomtom sells nav systems for trucks little difference is only that you can put in height and that height is mapped on the map of course,, they price was a bigger difference in the device,,

but i agree adding an option to waZE making a truck as vehicle type allowing the user to set height of his vehicle ,, would increase the amount of waze users immense ,,, ,, and the mapping of the bridges / viaducts or other overhanging obstacles we truck drivers face on their road have the obligation to map it if we get such option ,, we waze users have our wayze of helping out right

wouldn't mind if the height option would be premium feature if its very affordable priced

I would imagine RVers and folks with horse trailers would be interested too, not just professional drivers.

I too agree that a CDL mode would be amazing.

At the VERY least I think "Vehicle type" could be updated to include "Truck".

Currently map editing recognizes and is able to implement restrictions for Private, Electric, Motorcycle, Public transportation, and Taxi. I see no reason why I'm unable to select Truck as an option.

I understand the issues with the countless concerns regarding weight, height, seasonal, etc. and the potential legal concerns. But lets boil this issue down to the most basic form, Vehicle Type Restrictions. Why is it that truck restrictions are well known with physical signs everywhere dating back quite literally almost a century in some cases, but there are no concerns at all for adding Electric vehicles for Waze map potential restrictions? I understand Electric Vehicle Type was added for charging stations, but it was undeniably also added as a map navigation recognized vehicle type with the ability for the community to set restrictions or priority.

The first EV Hummer has an approximate 10,400-pound GVWR, that already has it hitting some 5 ton weight restrictions. Some roads are already seasonally closed to standard traffic. Some roads require off-road capabilities, which is not a current vehicle type either.

Vehicle Type restrictions can have infinite variants and reasonings, but the details already don't seem to matter. For example, I just edited a local highway rest stop exit to make the first left restricted to all current vehicle types year round. Because if I pull over for an unplanned rest stop, I don't want to keep hearing 'turn left because it is shorter' when that is the trucks only section and my bathroom and parking is on the right. Conveniently there was a map edit comment section to explain the non-selectable additional information regarding all current vehicle type restriction, where I wrote "Trucks Only".

There are hints that this is potentially a work in progress as it is mentioned in the Wazeopedia. Which surprisingly goes on to mention Vehicle type (trucks, buses, hazardous materials, etc.), but seems to be indefinitely on the back-burner.

Waze is a community project, but the impossible task cannot be done without allowing the community to take the first step.

We have a 37’ fifth wheel and would love to be able to set height and details also. Then we could use one app for all.

It has been inquired about several times, but long story short, don't expect it any time soon.

There are several MAJOR hurdles to overcome when considering trucks. Not the least of which include things like GVWR and road weight limits, seasonal weight restrictions, and heights of the trucks and overpasses.

Getting things like weight allowances and bridge heights would be paramount to that feature otherwise trucks would be routed down places they cannot go.
i mean, i drive a tow truck, and we're still usually subject to truck restrictions, but i'd settle for just being able to set vehicle type as truck, and not be routed down roads closed to CMVs. bridge height and GVW limits is not as difficult a prospect as you might think. most places already have such information published, i could probably have the entire city of st paul done in a day or less

As a truck driver I would love this. Right now I use Waze for reports on hazards seen by the community, but have to rely on other apps for truck routing for clearances, etc. If Waze ever gives an option for Truck Drivers to have these sorts of routing, especially clearances and bridge weight restrictions, it would be epic.

Just a button to avoid truck restricted roads would be a good start.

Unfortunately, we already have a considerable amount of volunteers to map these features - the current Waze map editors.

We've been asking Waze for years to add things like height, width, length, weight restrictions: things that would benefit drivers of trucks of all sizes, RVs, people towing large trailers, large SUVs and so on. The answer from Waze HQ has been a consistent "we're not going to do it".

The map editor currently allows us to define restrictions based on vehicle types like "towing", "truck", "RV" but since there is no fixed definition of these vehicles - and most definitions would depend on a specific weight/length/width/height - they are worse than useless. They are an insult from an HQ who have said they aren't going to implement those vehicle types in the app either.

I don't want to crush your hopes. I applaud your wishes and would dearly love to improve Waze to cater for vehicles beyond "standard" cars and motorcycles. But realism suggests that self-driving vehicles with all these checks built-in may arrive sooner than Waze support. :(

I'm sorry, but the word "amazing" is literally the right word to use. ;)

Staff don't read this forum but, if they did, they would tell you the same thing they tell us every time we ask:
  • Waze does not and will not support trucks
  • Waze does not and will not support height/width/weight limits
The only way I expect they ever will is if someone can find a suggestion for how trucks can be usefully involved in Carpool - since that is their current obsession.

I didn't mean to say you shouldn't ask - I just didn't want you to be disappointed when it doesn't happen or if you don't get an answer. ;)

I have a ritual with the Waze Community Manager for the UK. Every year, we have a UK Editors Meetup where we can submit questions in advance. One question I always ask is if we can have weight/height/width restrictions. Every year the answer is the same: "We are not going to do that, but never stop asking".

I think "waiting without expectation" is a Buddhist attitude - one that anyone dealing with Waze HQ is wise to cultivate. :ugeek:
