Level Crossing Alerts now showing on Waze App and WME

Post by Kkervinjones
As you may be aware Level Crossing Alerts (LCA) have recently been added as new feature to the Waze app. You can read more about this on this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=300876

For the UK, Waze HQ did not import the list of level crossings for us as they determined there were too few to warrant the import. During the beta process, the UK champs have added the majority (if not all) of the level crossings on the public highway. Below is an example of one in Crosby, Merseyside.

All the crossings added have been locked at L5. If there are alterations that need making to any of the crossing mapped, please raise a request in the Editor Request Forum in the usual fashion.

Please ensure you have the Level Crossings layer switched on. If you find a level crossing that not mapped, please confirm with the UK Champs first, as the crossing may no longer be valid.

For tram lines, we will only be mapping crossings if the tram line is segregated from the road. Those tram lines that are along roads and you have to cross over them to access/egress side streets (give way or traffic light controlled) should not have Level Crossing Alerts added (they should be treated the same as bus lanes).

These all fit the criteria for mapping so have added to each one.

Done :D

Doesn't look the most active line, which may have mean it was missed from the original list.

All done, our initial mapping was based on the busiest level crossing provided by Network Rail, guess they class this as a quite route... and not theirs ;)

This UR reports that an alert was given when driving near (1000 feet) a crossing, even though the route did not cross the railway.

Which is fine if you like railways - but otherwise it's a high nuisance value?

And are they going to be 'Level Crossing' in U.K. or are we going to have to get used to 'RRC' as with 'Parking Lot Road'.?

Shouldn't they be locked at the same level as the segment they are placed on, as per the guidelines for Speed Cameras?

Can you clarify what you mean by 'not valid'? If railway tracks cross the road then isn't that a crossing, or is there a certain frequency of trains that qualify it?

If you change your language to English (UK) in the WME settings, you will get mostly UK terminology instead of US, including Parking Road and Level Crossing

What was the thought behind adding this as a feature and alert in the app?
Is it a safety warning, to let users know that there may be a barrier ahead? Or that the user might want to choose a different route if they think they might get stuck at a barrier when a train crosses?
