Mostly a safety feature. There have been promotions from Network Rail at level crossings previously with safety messages.

The alert itself will not effect on routing. The driver will also not be informed when selecting the route if there is a level crossing on the route. It only alerts on approach, just like a speed camera.

As the UK Champs have already placed the Crossing Alerts onto the map, they've all automatically been set to L5. No changes need to be made to the ones that are on, which is why they're locked so high. Please raise a request to make changes if needed.

We have a list of level crossings obtained from Network Rail. There could be cases where a crossing looks active on Google Street View, but work may have been done to close the crossing, or convert it to a bridge since the GSV imagery was done.

For now I think we should just use them for what they're designed for, Rail Level Crossings. Anything else may confuse the matter.

There have been discussions if we should map them for Tram crossings that are segregated from the road, but that's about the limit.

That's fine. If they are legitimate level crossings, they can be added. If you can't add yourself, give me a permalink and I'll get them added.

Give it a go it you like. Alternatively, give me the location of the stations, and I'll do a scan of the length of railways, and see where the crossings are manually.

If you get a list, they'll still need to be added manually, but exact geographical coordinates will be required.

I just double checked and the option to add is locked to L4+

EDIT: Actually, ignore that. I have a Wikipedia article with the locations.

Ok, I've added the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railway level crossings, and also a couple for the KWVR. I think as the NYMR is connected to the Network Rail network, they seem to be in their listing.

I need to have a look at other heritage railways now.

Sadly, Network Rail aren't the only people with level crossings. There are a fair few near me on the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways that haven't been added yet, and that probably applies to other narrow gauge railways in Wales and elsewhere. I also see the level crossing at Oakworth on the KWVR is missing (didn't they watch "The Railway Children"?) although the one at Grosmont on the NYMR is there.
How do "the powers that be" want us to tackle the missing ones?
Thanks
Martin

I don't appear to be able to add - them I'm only L3? "Level Crossing" is greyed out in the editor for me?
