Lanes Edit Permissions - Updated

Post by Timbones
As more users are able to see lane guidance in the app now, we've decided to open up the editing feature so that more of you can contribute to the map. As of today, all editors ranked 3 or above will be able to use the edit Lanes feature in WME.

Please do read the Wiki page about it, and there's also these forum threads that might have some useful discussions to help you. Any questions, do comment below.

We're also looking for feedback from all editors and drivers on how best to map lanes on the motorways, so your input will be appreciated there too.

There are some scripts that will help too: The WME Color Highlights script will now show segments with lanes, though if you want something more advanced then check out WME-LaneTools. And coming soon, WME Route Checker will be updated to show which lanes will be shown to drivers while navigating.

I don't think there should be any TIO Keep Right at this junction for users who are staying on the A406
Yes, I agree.  I just wanted to use this junction as an example of what could happen if View Only and TIO were applied together.  I'll try to find a better example.

A better example:

Ideally the left two lanes should be Waze Default.  This will match the TTS to the screen arrows.

Throwing my two cents in on this one as I get LG popups daily given the road network in my city.

I don't find them that distracting, they appear no differently to how Google maps would do it, suddenly filling a section at the top of your phone screen and pushing the rest of the content downwards. They are however quite large compared to other navigation services, I have a large phone so it doesn't bother me, but it fills lets say around an inch block at the top of the screen in the new not-quite-black-but-grey background colour. At a quick glance the size makes it easy to spot, a hell of a lot easier than the new notifications bar at the bottom of the page. It requires less effort to look at and understand.

As an example, here is a segment I drive twice daily at a minimum
I turn left which means left lane. There are 3 lanes:
1 - Left + straight
2 - straight only
3 - right only
It is at around the junction with "Lower Bethesda St" (track backwards along the linked segment, they're one way segments) where the "popup" appears, plenty of time ahead of the junction.
As expected, on approach, lane 1 is white in Waze LG popup, lanes 2 and 3 are grayed out. This granted, could be a lot more obvious. But it's noticeable enough to glance at.
I'll grab a screenshot when I make this trip later today for added benefit.

EDIT: Screenshot as promised

I like having LG features, a lot of the roads in the city center (for me) are duel lane, high traffic roads with a lot of common "problem" areas where drivers cross over lanes midway through the junctions because they got it wrong. I think they have been mapped correctly and are a benefit more than a hindrance.

Regarding this, if you're in a fairly built up area with a lot of large junctions I can absolutely see how it would be a problem, especially if lower level editors ever got access to this. I personally use alerts only so I get no sound unless I am driving areas I don't know and need turn instructions, so again the popup doesn't bother me that much.

I've added the screenshot as promised in my previous reply. For the sake of spewing details to you folks (some people really like details) this was running on a Samsung Note 20 Ultra 5G. Which is 6.9", with a resolution of 1440 x 3088 pixels (~496 ppi density).

Fun fact, the screenshot directly from my phone was too big a file size to upload here so the image you can see is actually a screenshot of a screenshot on my desktop :P

The added niceness of this image is that you can see the difference between the LG popups and the new alert popups, as there is a "speed camera" in between me and the junction.

"Speed camera" in inverted quotes because they adjusted the road layout, removed the lines, put a pedestrian crossing in place but left the camera there for fun

I would argue that lane guidance isn't required here. The turns seem to follow a pretty logical and common method. I thought lane guidance was meant to be used sparingly on particularly confusing junctions?
I asked (due to being level 2 and having no control over it) for lane guidance to be added to a select few junctions within my city whilst it was still a beta only feature so that I could benefit from testing it and seeing how it worked. The road layout is problematic at best with people merging across lanes. However, if you believe it is a mistake to make use of it here, it's open to those of you who have permissions to discuss it.

FTR: Lots of folks don't realize that lane 2 splits into lanes 2 + 3 at the junction. So I see it daily where people cut across the white lines from lane 1 to lane 2 thinking it continues and that lane 1 at the junction is left only, it's not.

Given that I drive these roads regularly, I think it's quite helpful to keep it in place. They help to identify the lanes where the road markings either don't exist or are very faint and often ignored. Just my two cents though :)

As with all mapping in WME less is more. Lane Guidance is intended to help with potentially confusing junctions
In light of people commenting that it is distracting I think we need to take that on board and only map where necessary. IMO this junction is pretty straightforward. If I wanted to turn right I'd be in lane 2 before the point at which it splits. Straight forward can be accessed from either lane and if I was turning left I'd be in lane 1. If people are suddenly changing lanes then maybe they need a re-test rather than help from a sat nav.

Also the point at which lane guidance pops up on screen is probably when there are only 2 lanes. Could that be confusing as well?

Not meaning to pick on your work by the way. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples that could be contested. :D

Edit: I can see you added another paragraph to your post which I didn't see at the time, as you can see from what I quoted. So I understand the specific issue a little better now. Still think it's a pretty logical layout though.
Again, not so much my work as an area I could test the beta implementation of LG :)

I'm happy for any critique, at the end of the day I'm a L2 editor, not an AM or CM. I welcome all feedback (I would regardless of level), so I'm happy for you to raise your point! I do understand your reasoning, and I do fully understand why this junction could be left without LG. I wouldn't mind if it was removed (again, testing purposes for waze beta builds, I've tested it now), however as mentioned. I think LG helps regardless due to it being a more than 1 lane junction. I personally would prefer LG even if it is glaringly obvious, I have the benefit of knowing this city, put me in a different city with different lanes and it can become stressful even if the road layout is really simple.

I do get the "less is more" idea, albeit it makes Waze look sparse and dull in places (again, my opinion), but I think LG is something which could be a benefit. Perhaps we should feedback about the layout of LG to waze devs to make it smaller and less of an eye sore on the screen. But I digress, I do understand the concerns of others with regards to it being a distraction.

I am seriously worried by this change.

I have been in discussion on few times with another of the champs regarding over use of LG, editors adding far to many junctions, T junctions, simple junctions etc.

It has got to the point that in certain areas I have had to switch to other navigation methods due to the amount of LG pop ups. Every time a pop up appears we automatically glance at the screen, each time we do this its a split second that we are not looking at the road, and that's all it takes it a split second !!!

One of the main benefits of using Waze was it's simplicity, yes we can all understand the need for ad's but recently there are so many LG pop ups that it is confusing.

Can we please ensure that this function is well policed by our CM's?

Thank you for your guidance on this, it's a feature that I've been hoping would arrive and I'm already finding it useful.

From an actual mapping point of view most of the roads in my area that warrant lane guidance are locked at level 4 and I'm only at level 3 so I'm unable to add anything to these sections but hopefully in time I'll find somewhere to use it or finally reach the next level (although to be honest I'm not entirely sure how that works these days).

I'll read up in the meantime and hopefully get to make a difference at some point.

I'd like to better understand what the driver experience is here, as I'd expect the lane popup to be accompanied by a turn instruction, so not adding a new popup. Is this not the case? Can you share some specific examples and describe how it appears to the user?

Ideally, every junction would be mapped with as much information as possible, to reflect reality, with a setting within the Waze app to select how much you want to see the lanes. Waze keep telling us we should not be editing the map to change the behaviour of the app.
