Lanes Edit Permissions - Updated

Post by
As more users are able to see lane guidance in the app now, we've decided to open up the editing feature so that more of you can contribute to the map. As of today, all editors ranked 3 or above will be able to use the edit Lanes feature in WME.

Please do read the Wiki page about it, and there's also these forum threads that might have some useful discussions to help you. Any questions, do comment below.

We're also looking for feedback from all editors and drivers on how best to map lanes on the motorways, so your input will be appreciated there too.

There are some scripts that will help too: The WME Color Highlights script will now show segments with lanes, though if you want something more advanced then check out WME-LaneTools. And coming soon, WME Route Checker will be updated to show which lanes will be shown to drivers while navigating.

Just to remind everyone that even though lane guidance is released to edit in WME and shows for 100% of all app users we are still learning how much, how little, and where to use it. There has been very little testing done in Beta other than getting the mechanics to work. Until we get more feedback from users when it goes wrong or where it is deemed irrelevant you should use your common sense.

The less is more statement was mostly to discourage mapping of every junction node on the map. There is still ongoing discussions on mapping at a junction with multiple lanes even when the directions are obvious, some find it helpful to be consistent and map them, others find it an annoyance.

I don't think the View Only is necessary on the two Potteries Way segments, it's a 2 lane road and both lanes continue. The right turn lane splits off one of these lanes, it's not a running lane, so if you just stay in your lane you don't need to take any action or require any guidance, it's only if you are turning right that you need to know.

theMadcabbie wrote:(re:L3 editors) I have been in discussion on few times with another of the champs regarding over use of LG, editors adding far to many junctions, T junctions, simple junctions etc.
I don't think it will be too much of a problem, the vast majority of roads that are suitable for LG are locked at (auto)4. However it would be very useful for L3 editors to see the LG that has been mapped.

I have no idea if there is an issue or not without going for a drive
The junction had Lane Guidance set to only show for the two left lanes leaving the A27(E).
The reporter was correct, the junction has now been updated to show LG for traffic continuing in the 2 right lanes.

If you're using TIO's to give Keep Left/Keep Right instructions wouldn't you use the Slight Left/Slight Right arrows in the LG to match?
Using the Straight (Continue) arrow could be confusing if being told to turn

Of course in this specific case theres an argument to remove the TIO and just have it as View Only or View and Hear.......

I don't think there should be any TIO Keep Right at this junction for users who are staying on the A406. This Keep Right creates a turn instruction on the app screen, giving drivers a mileage countdown to a point where they 'just stay on the same road'.
I always want to see how far it is to my next turn/exit, i don't need to know how far it is to a random junction were i'm not turning off. If this junction were set to No TIO + LG-Continue Straight [View Only] users would see their exit info but also get the correct LG to stay on the A406

The only issue I've been having is with the "View Only" setting. Initially I though it was a good idea to set this on some junctions, but I've actually found it a bit confusing in practice. You get used to the screen instructions matching exactly what Kate is telling you....with View Only enabled there is a mismatch between Kate's instructions and whats on the screen, and it just "feels" wrong.
E.g. on the link that Luke posted, there is a view only override at that junction for straight on. If you were driving from the permalinked segment and turning left onto Clough St....Kate will say "in 500m turn left onto Clough St" but the visual instruction on the app will be showing you that you need to do something in 100m. Maybe View Only should be restricted to junctions where there is a reasonable distance to the next junction so there is no confusion.

I'm on the road again tomorrow, so will do some more test runs.

One issue I've noticed is View only being applied when there is a TIO active at a junction.
If there is a TIO (e.g. keep left, keep right etc) or the junction angle is such that Waze will give an instruction, then the LG should be set to Waze Default so that the TTS will say "in 200m use the left lane to keep left" etc, and show the LG consistent with other junctions.  If its set to View Only, then the TTS will only say "in 200m keep left" and show the LG.  Yes only a small difference, but consistency etc etc..... I think its always worth checking the junction angle and/or TIO.

As an example here:
https://www.waze.com/en-GB/editor?env=r ... =208193705
For traffic travelling straight on the A406, there is a TIO here saying keep right, with LG set to straight on arrow and Waze default.  This gives the correct matching TTS and LG display.
But if you set this to View Only, then you will get the LG display, but the TTS will only say keep right, rather than "use the right two lanes to keep right".  A minor thing, but still.....

Of course in this specific case theres an argument to remove the TIO and just have it as View Only or View and Hear.......
