Road Shields and improved Turn Guidance

Post by Kkervinjones
Some of you may have noticed a new function in the editor showing the Road Number in graphical format, or a new "Add road shield" link. More importantly, they've also added the ability to override the Turn Guidance at junctions.

Please see the main Forum entry from Waze.

Please see the new section of the Roads Wazeopedia article for guidance on to use this feature in the UK.

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/United ... ad_shields

Important to note that this feature is currently locked to L4, for both adding Shields to roads, and modifying Turn Guidance.

You will find there are some non-primary route network roads (non-PRN/Black on White) have the shield for Primary Route Network roads (PRN/Yellow on Green), and vise-versa. This is due to limitations on how the Shield feature works. It's based on Street name ID, rather than the individual road segments. Therefore it's important not to be arbitrarily change the shields, as you could end up changing the shield on roads miles away. Until Waze gives us another way to assign road shields, this issue will continue to show on some A roads.

The majority of A Roads have already been set automatically with their relevant shield, so most will not need to be changed.

Waze has also automatically added Shields to some Turns. Turn Guidance will only be required for main roads, where there is clear signage at junctions.

The initial L4 was set globally by HQ. The general thought not to lower it immediately is the ability to change a road shield on a segment miles away from your editing view without a second thought, due to how they have implemented this feature.
I forget if the lock is separate for segment shields and turn guidance... will take a look.

If I've understood the guidance correctly, currently Road Shields will only auto show on turns if the street name is 2 words(tokens) or less.
So A4 (E) [2 tokens] will display a shield instead of the text, but A4 (E) - Great West Rd [6 tokens] will still display as text unless the turn is edited and the shield set.

Question: Now we have the ability to customise the TTS on turns, should we be looking at depreciating the use of destinations in street names (A4 > London) on ramps and wayfinder segments? At the EMEA Waze did say they want to eliminate stud/wayfinder segments and it would also correct the terrible grammar of Exit left onto junction towards....

You're probably right about that. It's these type of junctions that will need improving. It's important to get the visual turn guidance matching the road signs, so having the street name is not so important. We shouldn't change any TTS (stubs/wayfinders) until ALL of the client apps (iPhone, Android, AA and CarPlay) are compatible with all the override instructions.

What's the reason that this has been restricted to L4 editors? It feels no more complicated than adding a closure and a lot less destructive than deleting a whole segment!

Granted there aren't many opportunities to make changes, but here is one in my managed area I found relatively quickly.
