Planned Delays In Map Updates

Post by
Hi All,

We would like to let you know that there is a planned delay to the Tile Build process - our sincere apologies for the late notice. We have decided to take advantage of the “quiet time” in December to make some necessary upgrades and overhaul many of the processes that make up the map's infrastructure.

We had hoped downtime would be limited, however we are now anticipating a period of around 1 month without map updates. This means changes requiring tile updates applied in WME will not be reflected in the LiveMap or in the Waze app in all countries until mid-January at the earliest. Any changes made during this period will be saved and implemented as soon as the Tile Build process is back online.

We know how important it is to have a stable and timely map update process, and we apologize for any inconvenience this causes. We deeply appreciate your patience as we make these necessary improvements.

We will keep this thread updated as we receive more information in the coming days, including a more accurate estimate of the downtime.

As always, if you have any feedback, questions, or concerns do not hesitate to reach out.

Thanks,
Ruben on behalf of the Map Squad

Quiet time = Holiday closures = Bad timing = Plan ahead

This was announced after several missed builds. If this was truly planned you should allow one final tile build to put things in a semi acceptable stage.

Otherwise, if this was due to something break, FAR MORE LIKELY, you need a better PR Dept to lie to us.

Regardless you need to figure out someway to implement RTC during this time otherwise the system is going to not work well during the Christmas travel season.

We are reading all of your feedback, and deeply understand your frustrations and concerns. Please let us first reiterate how important you are to us and Waze. We are so grateful for everything that you do, and sincerely apologize for this issue.

We truthfully did not have advanced notice of this required maintenance work. It came as a surprise to us too, and we absolutely agree that not being able to give you a proper heads up (as we have previously) is not acceptable. This started out as an unexpected and unscheduled minor disruption to service, which then uncovered issues that were not anticipated and outside of our control that have resulted in the need for more down-time. We are planning to add a notice in the WME Tile Build popup so that all editors are kept informed of the situation.

Since we last posted, we have learned that our earlier belief that it will take one month for this maintenance to complete may have been an overestimation. We are optimistic that in reality it will be shorter, but still don’t want to set any false expectations. Either way, we will take advantage of this time to make improvements so that the service is enhanced once back.

Unfortunately, since the process has already started, we can’t pause it to allow for the edits you’ve queued to advance to the Tile Build. We know this will negatively impact several ongoing and planned projects mentioned here in the comments like the Houston campaign and the Pakistan mapraid. Your in-progress projects and contributions will be protected to the best of our ability, and we promise that we will help prioritize rescheduling them once the maintenance is concluded.

Waze stands apart from other navigation services precisely because of the Community and the amazing and irreplaceable local knowledge you all provide to the millions of Waze users around the world. Please know we would never take this for granted.

Once again, we deeply apologize for the disruption this has caused. We are working on this as the top priority for the whole company, and hope to resume normal service as quickly as possible.

Thank you,
Ruben, on behalf of the Waze Communities Team

Thank you for the update, I look forward to further updates soon.

IT updates that are not announced to the editing community are not planned, they are emergent.  Regardless of the back story and the gaslighting occurring here, to close your system for a month at the earliest is devastating to your end user.  Let me know when to switch back from Apple Maps next year.

It sounds like the planned delay was only supposed to be for a few days or so.  As the second paragraph eludes to, the month long part of the delay was not anticipated.

Thank you for the update and more detailed explanation.  It takes a lot to admit a mistake.  Much of waze infrastructure may be proprietary the volunteers are even more valuable.  There are those out there that do not know how to admit when they are wrong and make others fix their mistakes.  Those are not leaders and are cowards.  You addressed the community quickly and politely.  You laid out action steps to help right the wrong.  Thank you

Happy to hear  the issu has been seriously considered and a manual action has been taken to sort it out.

Thanks.

Ianinessex wrote: Tue Dec 21, 2021 5:23 pm This is all great news.

The fact that the team have now completed a successful ROW tile build, even if it is currently a manual process is a excellent result of what I am sure has been hard work and a worrying time.

Having already completed a IL one yesterday, I am sure the US tile build will not be far away. Then, going forward, even if the next tile builds for all of us are slower than we are used to, we know they are coming and we are back in control of the map changes and the UR's

However, for me, what is even better news is the fact we are now getting regular progress updates on the work the Map Team are doing. Being informed and aware of the true situation and the work going on the resolve the problems is so much more positive than than the poor way this was originally communicated.

Let's hope this better style and accuracy of communication carries on long after this specific issue is resolved and we can all continue to move forward together.

Keep up the good work.

Better style and accuracy in Communication has always been a weak point in Waze.

To be honest I have to say that in last period some things started to change, and I understand as well it's not at all easy to change the mentality and behaviour inside a Company ,but following Ianinessex hope let's see the glass "half full".

I believe it's better to start with a poor communication and than improve it ( as it happened ) than to start with poor communication and continue on the same way .

MY personal hope is that in case of future issues Waze will start since the beginning with a more positive communication Style .

Thanks Ruben and all the Team working on that issue

I didn't see the changes I made on the map so I went to the settings and refreshed the map. Initially many different tiles at different zoom levels were blank but after relaunching the app it all looks fine now. I routed through an intersection which had its roundabout removed and the routing was all fine.

This is the perfect time for the WME team to implement "allowing managing closures when in snapshot mode", when they are done changing the color and size of the UI, of course.

At least I appreciate the honesty about the (hopefully pessimistic) time frame upfront and not just saying "we're looking into this" once a week for a month.
