EV Charging points - A new UK Project

Post by Ian
EDIT: Please see update on this (posted 24th July 2023).

As I mentioned a few days ago, we are now about to embark on a major project to import, review and correctly position all the EV Charging point in the whole of the UK.

These will be initially added to the WME as PUR's and will initially be locked to L4. We expect a trial batch of about 500 to arrive within the next day or so. Once we have worked through and cleared these and checked the process actually works as expected, we will get the first of several larger imports,

In total there are around 24,000 to do (of that about 8,000 are inside the M25, so the London editors are going to be particularly busy).

The process is fairly simple, but will take time:

Identify an EV PUR,  Accept it, move it to the correct position, if needed update the address details and whether it is a public one or a restricted use (such as in a hotel car park, purely for the use of customers).

Add any details about the location of the Charging point in the car park - such as "Chargers are located in the NE corner of the Car Park" This goes in the Location in Venue box.

Please do not change the other details about the charger. If you think something is wrong, please post the link and details in the Editors Requests forum.

If there is already an existing EV place point there, then merge the 2, using the data from the new one, but any useful data (photos?) from the original one. If the data conflicts then leave the two and post the location in the Editors Requests forum and someone else will have a look.

If there is no sign of any charger there (unlikely as the data has been supplier by the actual Charger providers) then again, leave the PUR or accepted place point, and post it in the Editors Forum for one of us to check.

The Champs have a spreadsheet to report back any issues we find while doing this work.

It is important that you do not reject any of these, as this breaks the link back to the source data and will probably result in it either being lost forever or keep being re-added (I am not sure which)

This is the biggest project we have undertaken and the launch of this feature in Waze in the UK is dependent on how quickly we can complete this task, so please can I ask you all to spend as much time on this as you can spare over the next few weeks.

Thanks

I'm using James's data,  yes - and it's extremely useful. If it wasn't for that, there are quite a few that would've been a right old pain in the hoop to find on the spreadsheet.

Just a thought - is it worth creating a subforum specifically for EVCS PUR updates/requests/feedback? Might keep things a bit tidier...

The initial  lock level has been set by HQ and we will use this at least until the trial is completed. Once we have a better understanding of what is involved, it may be appropriate to ask for this to be lowered, as we did with the Koifish map suggestions.

Having said that, even after lowering the lock, the majority of the work to resolve the Koifish suggestions was still done by the senior level editors. and so it may be that not all AM's are as keen to take on these issues as you are.  :D

As the more observant of you may have realised, the first of the EVCS PUR's have now started to arrive in the WME.

We are still awaiting access and instruction on how to update the control spreadsheet and so please can I ask that you all hold off from doing anything with these until I post the OK here.

Thanks

OK all, I think we are ready to start, and a smack on the wrist for those who have already started, 13 have been processed so far!!!

Please read the above information and the brand new draft Wazeo page - https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/United ... ng_Station before starting.

We will open a new sub forum just for the EVCS PUR work in the next few hours. Until then please post in this thread.

For this initial batch of PUR's please post a line in the thread for each one you do ( or decided not to do).

We need a permalink to the charging point and any comments you want to make,  - wrong location, can't find it, added easily, etc

any questions, please ask before acting. We need to do this carefully and correctly so we understand what needs improving before we get the main import of these, otherwise we will just go under with the amount of work.

Thanks in advance for you work on this important issue.

Point not found. Streetview is 2023 and does not show a charger here.

Please wait a moment, following the presentation today we may need plan B.  :D

Following the trial 200 and the youtube presentation earlier today,  the way we are going to do this is:

Everyone who wants to get involved will be given access to the master spreadsheet. I will request this for the people I know will be taking part. If you find you still do not have access - after I confirm this has been done -  let me know and I will sort it out. There is also a button  to request access which you can use. Please do not use this if you are below L4 as you will not get access and will cause more work for us sorting it out.

The process will be - Find a EV PUR in the spreadsheet which is within your editing area, go to it via the link in the spreadsheet and then take the appropriate actions when you get there.
Once the PUR has been dealt with, return to the spreadsheet and mark up the end columns appropriately.

While this is a bit time consuming, it is necessary so we can see which ones are done and which are not. It is also the only way we can do this and maintain the links from the original data to the final EV Charger. This is very important as later in the process, the link will go "Live"  and maintain the charging point data - plugs, number of connections etc, automatically. It will also give live updates to the users about the current status of the charger - available, in use, broken, etc.  For this reason it is critical you do not reject any PUR unless you are absolutely sure it is a mistake and not there, as this breaks the link and it will not ever be updated correctly. If you manage to "accidently" do this, please add a note in the comments column as it seems we may be able to get the point re-added at a later date to then re-process it.

With this approach, the only way to get this done with the minimum opportunity for error and confusion is for us to "go for broke" and import all 24,000 of these in one go. This will ensure that all the spreadsheet lines actually link to an imported point and if there are several close together, the chance of picking the wrong one is reduced.

Any you find any that are unclear, leave, add a comment next to the PUR and add a comment to the spreadsheet and hopefully someone else will be able to make sense of it.

Please ensue you have read the new Wazeo before you start and at intervals during this work, This is a live document and we will continue to add updates as this work proceeds.

https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/United ... ng_Station

With us all rushing around working on these, please make sure you are set to visible and you have the Live Users layer on. This should hopefully stop 2 people working on the same one. Also make sure you have the map comments layer on as this will be were we leave notes about any issue we have seem while working on these.

Any questions, please ask before doing anything as we do not want to make any more work than we have to.  :D
