[Examples Needed] Unpredictable / Irregular Event Closures

Post by BrettC0
Hi Editors!

Lately we’ve seen an increased number of user reports about missing closures that were not mapped in advance due to their unpredictable or irregular nature.

In general, these are cases where we know of a time range during which the closures are planned to take place, but we / the source don’t know exactly when within the range it will happen. For example:
  • Closures labeled as “Police Discretion”, e.g. a planned marathon, or some local traffic only rush-hour closures
  • Construction closures that do not actually use the whole window they were granted in a permit
  • On-and-off closures within the planned start and end time
We’re beginning an experiment to find a more flexible way to actually map these events / planned closures so that we can 1) surface them to drivers when appropriate, 2) fine tune our system to handle such closures.

If you have any recent or upcoming examples of these types of closures (with or without being associated with a specific event) that your community typically wouldn’t map, please share them below so the team can include them in our analysis and plan.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask below as well!

Thanks,
Brett, on behalf of the Closures Team

Hi all,

We want to start experimenting and finding ways to map these missing closures so it can be super useful it you can share with us any examples (no need to share the source).
The cases we are after is where we know of a time range during which the closures are planned to take place, but we don’t know exactly when within the range it will happen.
For example:
  1. Closures labeled as “Police Discretion”, e.g. a planned marathon, or some local traffic only rush-hour closures
  2. Construction closures that do not actually use the whole window they were granted in a permit
  3. On-and-off closures within the planned start and end time
Thanks,

Hi all,

Sorry for not being more clear!

Please share with us any published schedules for these sort of closures that you normally wouldn't map, along with the segments that would be affected by them had you mapped them.

I hope that is more clear. What is difficult about researching this phenomenon is knowing what you wouldn't have mapped in the first place due to it being unpredictable, like a construction closure that is only active sporadically, or a festival or parade route that is closed "by police discretion" only when it enters an area.

Thanks! Can you share a published schedule for a past race that you didn't map?

Both past and future are great!

None of them have had closures in WME and it's just from one promoter and just only in my state.

Hi Brett,
What do you actually expect precisely from us?
I assume you want information about events, not about non existent, "missing" closures.
What do you expect us to provide?
A wkt polygon of the location, some info about the timeframe and the type of event?
Will you then analyse the area to detect unusual patterns of traffic and segments with no trafic?
If needed, you can as well identify related URs and closures (from the app, from editors).
