Your help with Canadian cities update

Post by
Hi guys!

We're doing some work to update the cities in Canada.

The following cities seem to be wrong names from the original basemap.

We'd like to remove them. The meaning is that all their segments will be no longer associated to any city.
(the city field in the editor will be empty).

Could you please let us know if any of the following is an actual Canadian city name?

Thanks!

Shirli

Hi shirlig,

I noticed a bunch of those from around Alberta.

Some of these areas (e.g. ID 9 Banff) relate to an area outside the township limits, but inside the "Improvement District" -- are you wanting to do away with county declarations (for rural areas) and such?

Also, I wonder about the repercussions of eliminating the city name -- will we have errors about streets being elsewhere (and too far away)?

Since we don't have province definitions available, it seems like this might be premature...

A good number of these are in southern alberta, but, like doktor, i'm left wondering if we are removing all the county designations then?

Most of these are municipal districts that arise from another city, but is a larger geographical area around that city, for example:

Lethbridge, County of
This contains the city of Lethbridge, AB, but also many other locations, the towns of Coalhurst, Coaldale, Picture Butte, Nobleford, Barons, and probably a dozen smaller communities such as Chin, Diamond City, Fairview, Iron Springs, Shaughnessy, Monarch and Turin. It also covers hundreds of km of land outside of those towns and the city of Lethbridge.

For navigation I'm not sure it really means one hill of beans, as each of the places inside would have its own town names, unless, as doktor fears, there is a check at the street level about too many places with the same street name existing.

If we are removing these types of designations, it seems to me that these are all OK to do so within ALBERTA as they all follow the same pattern of being a municipal district.

This gives a better, more accurate description of these entities:

Further, Alberta is also home to Improvement Districts which are on your list. Again in terms of navigation purposes, I really don't feel these are important to be designated on the map, unless there is a street level control check. These mostly are areas surrounding parks, both national and provicincial.

From your post, these would include:

I.D. No. 24 Wood Buffalo
Kananaskis I.D.
I.D. No. 12 Jasper Park
I.D. No. 9 Banff
I.D. No. 4 Waterton
I.D. No. 13 Elk Island

I believe that leaves you with only the "District of ... " entries on your list to categorize/sort out. I cannot speak to most of those as they are outside of Alberta.

I'm so glad to hear province support is being actively worked on. Hope the list of Alberta ones helps out! :)

They are all actual places, question is are they a town/city or just a region? To be more accurate, should any of these appear in a standard address line, in the slot where one specifies the town/city?
Well, that's an interesting question.

It is unlikely that any of the Alberta ones would show up on an address line -- but *something* would. And the county name is a lot more descriptive than not having a city declared...

For example, the "Leduc County" one would likely have either Leduc, Nisku, Beaumont or any of the other list of communities / localities found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leduc_Coun ... localities -- but does it really make sense to go and find the limits for each of these places just to have the "City" field not say "County"?

That's not necessarily true when we're talking about a street address (as opposed to mailing).

19250 Township Rd 440, Edberg, AB should be at the "A" point here: http://goo.gl/maps/FGvwf

Despite the fact that it's WELL outside of the Township of Edberg (point "B" on the same map).
While were on the topic of being out in the boonies, is there any way that Waze could look into modifying the 'dirt road/4x4 segment' type to something like 'unpaved road'? Currently there are no options for gravel roads so we are being forced to group gravel roads into the dirt road segment type when Waze is trying to route people off highways onto gravel roads unnecessary.
According to the notes from Meetup 2013 ( viewtopic.php?f=129&t=42406 ):
Decisions Made
[*]Remove US Service Road type: routes the same as street and its use is confusing and redundant. Plan is for Waze to identify these segments, prepare the code to do the mass change and get approval from Champs to proceed. To be removed from WME at the same time.
[*]Rename US "Dirt/4x4" road type to "Unpaved" for clarity.
[*]Create new US "4x4/Offroad" road type as Waze wants all paths of vehicle traffic, no matter how remote or how its used, to be mapped.

Is there a way to fix multiple city names for one city?

For example, in my attached screenie, you'll see 2 names for Lethbridge, but there are actually 3 lurking around.

Lethbridge, AB
Lethbridge, Canada
Lethbridge, AB, Canada

Hi Adetia,

If you can send me the permalink, I'll clear that up, then get it on my list of smudges for removal by Waze staff.
