What do all the different colors mean?

Post by mynetdude
I see blue, red, yellow, green, etc.

I know blue is a major highway like Interstate 5 (USA) and I see red roads that should be yellow/tan... not sure why I see that.

Then I see some green roads near the freeway... what's up with all this?

would be nice to have this info right on cartouche,

so what is considered a Major highway? Since Blue is Freeway, etc... highways can be various sizes and have different jurisdictions.

For example HWY 238 is a state highway that is also known as the "williams HWY" in the city limits, as soon as you leave the city limits its now known as HWY 238 (but it can be referred to as the williams HWY for simplicity's sakes) it runs from Grants Pass boundary all the way to Medford, passes through Provolt, Ruch, Jacksonville is that a major highway??? (this HWY has 2 lanes/1 each direction.

Or how about the Grants Pass Parkway its a 4 lane/2 each direction highway that starts at I-5 and ends at the HWY 99 to the coast.

The map of my city is incorrectly showing highways.

Well, the info sort of IS in Cartouche. If you select a road segment and click "edit road details," you can change the road type... which changes the color. So it's pretty easy to figure out what color corresponds to what road type.

Go here: http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/How_ ... name_roads

That is a breakdown of how to decide what road type is correct.

If you still believe your highways are incorrectly labeled, change them.

No problem!

Yeah, it's tedious and a bit overwhelming at first... but it becomes addictive fast. ;)

I think that different countries will definitely have to work out their own road types.

There has been a bit of discussion about this. It would be nice to add it to the wiki... a breakdown and description of each road type for every country.

That would be fantastic if you could. This was something I REALLY struggled with when I first started editing.

Even within countries I think there will be some variation. Especially between urban and rural areas. I have both urban and rural in the area I manage and what I've been defining as a "Primary Street" looks very different in the real world depending on the area.

Then again, if you ignore appearance and focus on purpose, then they are identical. In both situations the road is a corridor which is an artery or feeder of some sort which is NOT a state/federal numbered route.

In an urban area, that may be a broad avenue with 2 lanes in each direction and traffic lights at every intersection (favoring traffic flow on the primary street ideally). And in a rural area, it may be a winding country road with only one lane in each direction but having the right of way at most intersections (only side roads have stop signs for example).

And then if either of those two roads gets a state or federal highway number, it of course would then be a minor highway.

I'm still tying to refine my thoughts on minor vs. major highway in some situations though. If I can refine my thoughts, maybe I can suggest something for the wiki.

How much do these types affect actual navigation? I mean in other countries there are different classification of roads which can be mapped to these "colors" but may be totally different type.

For instance, in Estonia we have main roads (just numbers 1-11 and 92) where some of them are also part of International E-road network (Ex where x is a number), then we have basic roads (numbers 12-99) and minor roads (don't know exact term in English, numbers xxyyy where xx is county code, at road signs only yyy is used) . Main roads can be almost like freeways (only ramps, no crossings, multi-lane and divided directions) near big cities but just normal two way roads outside. These could even pass smaller cities or villages where speed limit is 50 km/h and traffic lights after each 100-200m.

Currently I map them:
main roads -> freeways
basic roads -> major highways
minor roads -> minor highways

Maybe some zoom levels could be changed but otherwise it seems the best way to do it right now. I do not change street type even in cities where the are usually just bigger streets to keep them visible with low zoom level too. Otherwise there will be holes in map at city locations when zooming map out.
