Newly added roads and landmarks removed

Post by adjourno
I recently started editing maps.

Added some new roads (mostly service roads and backstreets that are drivable and often good shortcuts).
I even drove on some these roads after adding them and collected the new roads goodies.

Also added landmarks like banks, restaurants, clinics.

This morning I noticed that many of them have been removed from Waze map on internet.

Why?

Noted about the back alleys.

BUT, some of them are known to be of daily use and very useful driving routes.
I wonder how you differentiate then.

Also, the guidelines doesn't touch on landmarks... a few which I have added have also been removed.
Is it just a case of not snapping them on the roads?

I removed the back alleys and landmarks. They were not edited correctly (still red) and did not adhere to the editing guidelines. This was the PM that I tried to send to you but you had not signed in to the forums yet, so I couldn't send it.

Hi,

I've come across your edits in Bangsar and I'm reverting them. Please read through the Waze editing wiki before you continue with any more editing.

Specifically, you should not add every single back alley to the map as they usually are not optimal for routing and create clutter on the map.

I also recommend you join either of the FB or G+ groups and read the FAQs there before you continue editing.

They can't be differentiated, which is precisely why they shouldn't be mapped at all. Back alleys tend to be blocked by residents, or only have space for one car to pass in one direction. Hence it's not desirable to route drivers through them, especially when there's a street that can be used just a few meters away. Exceptions can be made for alleys that have many GPS points, or are the only way to get out of a dead-end street (but they must be set as parking lot roads, not service roads)
Also, the guidelines doesn't touch on landmarks... a few which I have added have also been removed.

Small landmarks of a certain size do not appear on the map so there's no point in creating them. And having too many landmarks clutters the map unnecessarily and can confuse instead of aiding drivers. Also, POIs can be searched using either the Google or foursquare search option (landmarks do not always appear in the search results). These guidelines aren't documented in the wiki (yet) but there have been many earlier discussions about what type of landmarks should be mapped in the FB group.

There were also many other problems with your edits, among them:
- Turn restrictions were not set correctly.
- Roads not connected properly to existing roads.
- Roads were overlapping each other and not junctioned properly.
- You disconnected some existing roads which would have caused a lot of routing problems if your edits went live.
- U-turns were enabled on many nodes when they shouldn't have been.
- City and street names weren't set correctly (when the roads that you created were red while other road were white/grey, this would have been an obvious red flag that something was not right with your edits).

Pls specify the area and EXACT location. Send the permalink. That will make it easy to check and know the reason. And for a fast respond, I would like to invite you to join WazeMY facebook group @www.favebook.com/groups/WazeMY. Since most of active Malaysia editors are in the group, you can get help and good respond from AM and other senior editor. Beside, you can have the good reference and materials about Waze editing in Malaysia.

Cheers..
