More tips for editors (after starting points)

Post by a4xrbj1
This is part of a message that I wrote to someone who recently started helping us on editing. I've noticed a couple of points which I think can be of help to everybody who just started editing on it's own. Sometimes Waze Cartouche editor is a bit tricky, like point No 3 is hard to find out and you sometimes go craze why you can't delete that bloody junction :D

Here we go:

1) You don't connect all streets - It's one of the most important things, when streets aren't connected the routing won't work. Please always check "Highlight connectivity" under the view panel. When you then select a street, you should see all connections in green and orange

2) City naming - Noticed a lot of PJ and even a couple of Bangsar in your city name. It's clearly all in KL and as stated Bangsar isn't a city, it's a suburb where Waze isn't helping us at all of making a field for it.

3) Underlying streets in roundabout - check out this location http://world.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=7 ... =103175938 hope you can see anything on zoom, otherwise zoom out. There's a nice roundabout that you built, great thing but I noticed there were other streets directly below. I found it when I wanted to delete some unnecessary junctions from it but I couldn't (will give error message of "have to use same street-city name"). In reality it's very hard to find those underlying streets, which sometimes make the routing go bad (as they can be two-way in one-way street or wrong direction). Note that these underlying streets are found under any street, comes from people turning their bulldozer on when street is already there and Waze server not precise enough to notice double entry.

4) Locking direction - please always click on locking field when you enter a street name, it freezes the direction for this street segment. If you're unsure about direction, check Google Maps as they provide arrows on their map (need to zoom a bit to see).

5) Too many junctions - on the other hand you sometimes have too many junctions in a street, where's not necessary. A junction should be clearly when it touches another street or when there's something on the street where people will wait (like tol plaza). So you're using junctions to cut into relevant street segments, too many will make the editor go crazy and you usually can only select one. Also, the layout of the street becomes akward.

6) Building "triangle" type of junction - Noticed you put a lot of effort even into the smallest streets by building two one way roads leading to a two-way road. That's like it's in reality I know, but it takes so much time to build so that I usually just connect it in a 90 degree angle (see pic above the junction of Persiaran Ara Kiri and Jalan Ara Kiri). Save that costly time of yours rather for the main highways, where we need a lot of help (if you're driving there, otherwise become area manager where you have lot's more rights).

7) Mark primary Streets - If you see a yellow street in Google Maps, it's usually a Primary Street, means higher average speed, wider street and more flow. We need to take that as well into Waze, therefor use it as well. I've edited a lot of them in Bangsar, Jalan Ara Kiri is a small one but Jalan Ara is huge going around Bangsar. Will help on the map visibility as well, as you will notice the primary streets are visible on a higher zoom level and make the map look much better (means more complete).

Hope others find this helpful too, as there's not much here in our Malaysia forum!

Cheers,

Andreas
