A need to input house numbers?

Post by helvete666
Looking through WME we've an option to add house numbers, so whats everyone's thoughts on this? Worthwhile project for the areas you know or a crazy plan that'll never be completed?

thanks

I think I've added house numbers for exactly one street in Dublin, mainly as an experiment when the feature came out to see how it worked.

Waze doesn't currently use house numbers when searching for addresses, but I understand that eventually it will switch over to using them, presumably when there are enough of them.

Although they should be useful eventually, I think it would make perfect sense to add them if we had a mature complete map. We do more-or-less have a complete map in Dublin, but since there's so much work required to map the rest of the country, I've been concentrating my efforts on those areas where we don't even have most roads mapped, never mind house numbers.

It seems like a lot of work to enter house numbers even for just one street, so I'm not quite sure how Waze images we're going to enter house numbers for all streets. I wonder how other countries (with a complete map) are doing with entering house numbers.

Yeah from a Dublin point of view its looking great but outside of major towns I suspect the house numbering will fall off as rural house names come into play.

I might take on doing around areas I know, even though based on what I know of the postcode system(when ever it eventually arrives) and if Waze implements it correctly house numbers won't matter for GPS.

I imagine that even once we have post codes in place, people will still use house numbers. Even though the new postcodes are supposed to uniquely identify every building, house numbers will surely still be used to visually identify houses - imagine walking down a street trying to find a house using just "D29 Q7B3" for a reference - I can't imagine people will attach postcodes to the outside of houses.

So yes: postcodes might not matter for GPS (if Waze can handle Irish postcodes like it does UK postcodes (and even if it can, maybe it'll just use part of the postcode rather than being able to use the entire thing to find the precise location of an address)) but I expect house numbers will still be used by normal people.

I now make a point of adding house numbers on an ongoing basis on most new edits and older ones I have reliable data for, at least those I can access accurate house numbers for. I've conducted experiments with favourable outcomes. In paving new housing estates I make a note of the house numbers layout.

I'm given to understand that Waze advanced plans are for adding as much information on the map as possible, providing of course it is accurate!

This is my first post in a long time. Suffered serious spinal injuries resulting in major reconstruction surgery that has taken a long time to come reasonably right again. Hopefully getting back to near normality! Hasten to add injuries not sustained in a motor vehicle!!!

This is probably a good time to remind all editors (how many editors are actually reading this, I wonder?) to watch out for the presence of house numbers on road segments when moving them around, deleting them (not that we should ever delete valid road segments without good reason!) or splitting and unsplitting roads, because we don't want to lose or invalidate any already-entered house numbers.

There are ways of splitting and unsplitting roads while preserving house numbers - there's a page showing how to do this somewhere on the wiki (sorry, I don't have the link to hand right now).

Yes, welcome back, and happy editing!

Thanks David,
Hope I don't overdo it now! I was always told one must really take care of themselves more when they feel they have actually recovered!!!

Hi,

I have enough issues trying to read the street name signs, let alone house numbers! And given a good portion of houses have a house name, not a number, there is not way at this point to add these?
