User Reports (UR's) Ireland Map

Post by arthurohara
In the past twenty-four hours some editor has gone around and closed many UR's on the Ireland Map in quick succession without taking cognisance of ongoing in-train chats or trying to evaluate what the localised problem reported in the UR might be.

While not in favour of leaving unanswered (where editor has requested further information via chat) UR's in situ for too long, they should be left for a reasonable period of time so that the surrounding area can be examined minutely and fully updated with all obvious pertinent missing data that can be elicited by reasonable assessment. Where a local Editor is unable to deal with a UR, perhaps consideration should be given to alerting an Editor who will.

It is important to get this message across to the editor who performed the cull.

Thank you Pip,
Yes we now know who it was. I understand another editor has raised the issue!
Yes, a suitable WIKI page would be a great idea.
All the Best,
Arthur.

Two weeks with a bit of consideration and common sense thrown in should suffice.
I personally find that an in-depth appraisal in an area surrounding a UR usually throws up a considerable amount requiring fixing.

It's logical to adopt the measures recommended in the UK to deal with UR's with a caveat that Ur's in more remote parts of Ireland not serviced by a local Editor be left for minimum three weeks.

Is there a bot out there that will highlight UR's as soon as they are posted?

Hi Iain,

Thank you very much for all that very relative information which certainly could be adapted for use in Ireland.

I'm prompted to say that issues concerning the use of mobile phones while driving and road safety are particularly current in Ireland presently and would need to be addressed and incorporated into any future Guidelines on User Reports.

Only a few days ago the Minister concerned announced the introduction of additional measures which will totally ban handling/texting on mobile devices while driving. It's over and above what is normal in the EU and though it's scheduled to come into force on 1 May 2014, a complete draft is not yet available from the Ministers office. We're going to need a lot of lay-bys!

Sorry I cannot point to the legislation online because it's so new it's not apparently there yet, according to relative government departments I've checked with this morning and my own online searches.

Best wishes,

Arthur.

Hi,

I know I closed one or maybe two that you had commented on Arthur, But you would have known it was I as i would have said such in the pre close message I send. So If I have upset, do please accept my apologies.

It is a good question though as to what is a "reasonable" period of time. Uk wise a reasonable time is a week to two weeks. But maybe in Ireland a little more time is needed? What I find though is that you will come across a report for which the user who reported has since uninstalled the app to try something else. So you'll never get another report or feedback from that user, unfortunately.

Personally I feel that two weeks "should" be a reasonable time but I am happy to go with what is considered to be best.

Des. . . ;)

We don't have a policy specific for Ireland, but waiting at least seven days or probably better two weeks for a reply from the reporter seems to be common elsewhere.

In any case, I think it's a good idea to add a comment to a UR before closing it explaining what has been done to resolve it, or why it's being close if nothing could be done. This will inform the user what has happened but will also send a notification to any other editors who are following the UR (it's possible that many editors could be following a UR).

If there's an ongoing conversation involving other editors, it's probably better not to close it without talking to them first.

This sounds like a reasonable time to me: a minimum of two weeks to wait for a response in busy areas, and three weeks for less-busy areas (outside the main cities and their surrounds, let's say). I'd also like to suggest/recommend that all URs have a comment added just prior to closing them, so that the reporter and any involved editors get an explanation of what was changed.

I agree that examining the area around a UR often shows up things requiring fixing, and while this is worthwhile, do you think it's reasonable to close a UR when the defect being reported is quite obvious and easily fixed, but without going through the surrounding area in great detail? I expect some editors might not have time to examine areas in great detail, but might still have time to fix URs in passing.

I know there's an editor extension called UR Overview, although I haven't tried it myself. I *think* it shows URs on the live map, and might show lists of URs - although I'm mostly guessing because I've only read about it and haven't tried it. I think it's popular in the UK - perhaps one of our UK colleagues on this thread could comment?

For getting a country-wide overview of URs, the script you want is Livemap UR Layer by Twister-UK. Using this script you can identify outstanding URs across the entire country:

Note that this screenshot is only showing URs over 50 days old!

I use this script regularly to sweep the entire UK for old URs that need to be dealt with.

You can find a the UK guidelines for dealing with URs here. Feel free to copy it if you like, making any appropriate tweaks for your own situation.

Hi Arthur

Couldn't agree more! First question is, any idea who it was? I know I closed a few in the area I can do, Monaghan, but I knew what they where and was confident I was getting it right. Second question, how about a wiki page to formalise how to deal with URs?
