Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere (I couldn’t find anything) but a few colleagues have asked me if I can find out about the Waze directive on the A9 average speed system.
None of the devices on the gantries measure speed at that point, apparenlty they only record a time of day and then compare it to the known ideal at the next. Can the area have the cameras removed and just leave the “average speed check zone” enabled on the road segments.
Ian has added most if not all of the cameras at level 6 but, sadly, he’s not with us now to remove them again. Any other Level 6 want to weigh in with their thoughts on this. Niche request I grant you but it’s annoying users of the app and they come at me for advice or, at worst, ditch the app in favour of some competitor. I would rather they stuck with us.
Wasn’t the decision made to map each camera (even though as you say the location of the camera is irrelevant in an average speed zone) because otherwise we get lots of UR reporting each ‘missing camera’
I have checked all the cameras and lowered the 3 renegade L6 ones to L4. Most were correct.
For Average Speed Zones, we have agreed that all the cameras should be mapped to prevent excess reporting if it is noticed they are not there.
While they do not actually measure the speed at that point, they do record the vehicle passing and add this to the average speed system to calculate if you are exceeding the speed, so they are speed cameras, just a different sort.
I think they need to stay and if someone reports this, explain they are still recording the vehicle passing and calculating a speed, which if exceeded will result in a fine. Cameras being along an ASZ in Waze just helps to remind the driver to be aware. If they are driving within the speed limit all they will get is a visual indication. They will only get the audible warning if they pass the camera while exceeding the speed limit, which is illegal, camera or no camera!
