Account Login Loop in Waze Map Editor (WME) – Error Code 104 (Banned from Editing)

Hi everyone,

I have been experiencing a frustrating login loop with the Waze Map Editor (WME) for the past two years. Every time I attempt to log in to the editor, it traps me in an endless loop and redirects me straight back to the login screen. Because I couldn’t find a fix at the time, I eventually set the issue aside.

Recently, however, my city has undergone major road maintenance, resulting in numerous closures. Waze has been routing drivers through what are supposed to be standard car roads, but are actually completely unpaved off-road routes. I wanted to log in to the editor to fix these map segments and assist local drivers, but I am still blocked by the same login loop.

Following some recent research, I decided to check my browser’s developer console during a login attempt. Here is the console output:

GET https://www.waze.com/row-Descartes/app/Session?language=fr 403 (Forbidden)

Unable to fetch session FetchError: Server Response Error: {“errorLevel”:“ERROR”,“errorList”:[{“code”:104,“details”:“User is banned from editing the map.”}]}

According to the console, my account has an active map editing ban (Error Code 104). I am completely unaware of any past editing violations, and I never received any notification or email explaining why this action was taken (I have thoroughly checked my inbox and spam folders).

Could a local Coordinator or staff member please look into the root cause of this ban and let me know if it can be resolved? I would love to help improve the map data for my area.

Thank you for your time and assistance!

Hi Zrkkun and welcome,

I wrote to you on December 18, 2023. You saw my invitation to join the community but didn’t reply. Because you continued to vandalize the map, although I assume not intentionally, you were blocked on December 26 with a small comment: “Please block the new editor until he contacts the community”.

Since you’ve finally gotten in touch, this issue can be resolved. All you need to do is join the group and complete the training courses, and you’ll be able to edit again. In fact, completing the training courses alone is enough:

As for real-time road closures, you can also use the app itself for that. You can close roads along your itinerary. But it would be better to also report it as an error, including the closure details: duration, reason, and direction.

Dear MaximKiev,

Thank you for your reply.

You are correct; I did see your message back then. However, at the time, it read like an optional invitation to a Telegram group rather than a mandatory requirement. Because I did not use Telegram, I decided not to join.

Furthermore, I didn’t realize this would lead to an account ban, especially since I couldn’t finalize any map edits back then without the approval of a Level 2 or higher editor.

While I don’t currently use Telegram, I will gladly install it if it is required. I am also more than happy to take the training courses. Please let me know if I need to post or share the results once I complete them.

P.S. As I began looking into the training courses, I realized I will need access restored to my WME account in order to actually complete them. Could you please lift the restriction so I can proceed with the training?

Best regards,

Zakariae

It wasn’t like that in 2023. All incorrect edits went straight onto the map. Only last autumn was a suggestion mechanism introduced, but even that doesn’t always prevent mistakes. Most edits are not reviewed by senior editors. That’s why it’s very important to learn how to edit properly. I was told yesterday that your account has been unblocked.

Regarding the Telegram invitation, it would have been enough to simply reply that you don’t use it. That would have been a starting point for contact, which would have allowed us to warn you about the recurring mistakes.

And since I have the opportunity, I must state responsibly that refusing to use Telegram and preferring the outdated WhatsApp instead is like choosing a Trabant over a Mercedes.
