Waze is preparing the next phase of the Permanent Hazards expansion, and the GCS group would like to gather community feedback on segment-based and/or weather-related hazards.
How Weather-Related Hazards Work
Weather hazards can apply to an entire segment (such as icy roads) or a specific point on the map (such as a flood-prone location).
To make these weather hazards truly effective, the system will rely on integration with real-time weather data. By using current weather data, specific PHs will be displayed to drivers intelligently — only when local conditions match — ensuring that Waze users receive critical alerts exactly when they matter most.
Experimentation between Mapping and Display: The long-term goal is to display these new PHs to Waze users while they drive. However, the staff’s idea is to conduct experiments to evaluate the value of each alert type for the driver. If the data shows that a specific alert does not provide the expected safety benefit, they may adjust the display strategy.
