Wisconsin editors,

The State Managers for Wisconsin are very happy to jointly announce a major new initiative that is being launched with the goal of providing even more coverage/support for editors across the state. The new initiative is being tentatively-referred to as the “Large Area Managers” effort for the moment.

This initiative divided up the Wisconsin map into five “zones”, closely related to the state DOT regional areas, in a way so that every square inch of the state will be editable by the two R5 State Managers as well as one Large Area Manager.

This initiative came about concurrently with the same experiment in Ohio. I give Terry props for getting his up and running before we did  (You’ll probably notice that this post is very similar to what he posted for his own announcement) The original high-level vision/hopes for the Large Area Manager role, which again may change:

  • Establish Baseline

  • Update segments with unknown direction/clearly-incorrect names (segments from initial basemap import are very common in rural portions of the state even to this day)

  • Implement proper Functional Classification for all segment based on national guidance (the majority of counties have never been brought into compliance)

  • Ensure all segments are locked to minimum lock level appropriate for their segment type (and requesting uplock for those that they cannot currently lock themselves)

  • Regular Upkeep

  • UR/MP Management: perform frequent, regular User Report/Map Problem passes over their entire area in accordance with the recently-standardized UR Management System (may need to be logged into the wiki to see the new content, use your WME username/password)

  • Unlock/Update forum response: monitor Unlock/Update forum for any posts in their zone, service directly or escalate if needed

  • Construction/Closures: responsible for staying current on all major construction projects, ensuring realtime closures are entered into the system as needed. Encouraged to establish ongoing relationships with municipal/county/ODOT representatives in their zones

  • Mentoring/outreach: proactively seek out new editors and encourage them to join the community, stay in regular contact with existing editors who work within their zone and work to help them improve/expand skillsets and knowledge bases

  • Rapid Reponse: lead the response coordination effort for unplanned traffic disruptions in their zones (e.g., freeway closure due to major accident)
Without further ado, the first set of Large Area Managers:

  • NorthWest: kb7qdi(R3)

  • NorthCentral: Jaazzboo(R3)

  • NorthEast: (currently open)

  • SouthWest: warhawktrombone(R3)

  • SouthEast: tango259(R4)
Big congratulations – and thanks! – to the editors who agreed to assume more responsibility for maintaining/improving the quality of the Wisconsin map.

Finally, the State Managers would like to express tremendous gratitude for the immense, unwavering support we received from SkiDooGuy, Acting Regional Coordinator for the Great Lakes Region; and TerryPurdue, Ohio SM and recent United States CM, for their help in providing further organization of this based off Ohio’s plans. Thank you!

For my part, the LAM has been a positive experience plus an outlet for a place to practice editing.

I can say there have been a number of accomplishments during my tenure as LAM of the Northcentral Region.

Gaining valuable editing experience and expertise

Learning how to work with the wiki and receive guidance from higher ranking editors to sharpen my skills
Clean basemap
Set FCs throughout the region

Help other editors in their editing skills
Partner with the other LAMs in Wisconsin
Learn from my mistakes and the mistakes of others
Learn more ettiquette
Have a lot of fun doing this
Getting to know higher ranking editors in Wisconsin and the GLR better; thanks for all of the unlocks and uplocks!

Thank you for this opportunity! Hopefully the general health of the map has improved over the course of the past 9 months
