Athlone town centre refurbishment: Road closure requests

Welcome back :slight_smile: Thank you for the update, I’ve applied changes for points 1-4. Closure is set until Mon 19 Nov so let’s touch base at that stage.

Could I take advantage of your local knowledge and ask - do you happen to know/remember if this is a roundabout as the satellite imagery and streerview suggests?

Brilliant, thanks Yanis! :slight_smile: Looks good.

Sure. There was a (mini?)-roundabout over there, but it was removed in favour of a regular junction with traffic lights, in preparation for the one-way system (ā€œOrange Loopā€). It looks as it’s here to stay.

Thanks for the clarification, I will add a map comment so any future editors won’t wonder the same as myself.

Hi Gal,

Have you any update on the road closures in the middle of Athlone? The existing closures on the Waze map expire in just a couple of days - if you think the same roads will remain closed for a while longer, we can extend the closures.

++David

Hi David,

Thanks for keeping an eye on that.
As of yesterday evening, there was no change in the closures. However, it seems that works in that part (the western) are nearing completion. On the other hand, next week I’ll go away again, for ten days or so.

So, maybe it’s best to add a week to the expiry date of the closures, and I’ll post an update on Monday night before I go?

Gal

'morning,

Cool - I’ve just added a week to the closure end date.

If you could give an update before you go away that’d be great. If there’s no change then, we can set the closure to expire after you come back.

++David

Brilliant, will do.
Thanks, David! :slight_smile:

'morning Gal,

Will you still able to post an update this evening?

++David

Hi David,

Sure.
I’ll be heading to town centre later this afternoon so it might even be earlier…
Gal

Good evening David,

So, at a rather good timing, all closures seem to have been lifted today, and traffic goes in the normal order (as a one-way system).

Then - would you please cancel all closures in Athlone town centre (https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon=-7.93856&lat=53.42329&s=104307991&zoom=5&segments=119235740 and https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon=-7.93856&lat=53.42329&s=104307991&zoom=5&segments=119235876).

I’ve reapplied one-way directionality to https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon=-7.93882&lat=53.42311&s=104307991&zoom=6&segments=119185583 and https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon=-7.93882&lat=53.42311&s=104307991&zoom=6&segments=119235837 to reflect the current traffic restrictions.

Everything else looks pretty good. I wonder if the roadworks will continue soon enough (as works on the eastern part of R446 Dublin Gate St haven’t commenced yet) or it will wait for January…

Thank you for following up on this in the last few months!

Gal

'morning Gal,

Excellent! I’ve just lifted all the closures in Waze.

Cool - thanks. Is this one-way setting permanent or is it likely to change again?

I notice the GPS tracks in WME are currently showing traffic moving in both directions, but the GPS tracks typically take a few weeks to update.

So do you think there’s more work — and possibly more closures — to come?

Thanks for being the eyes on the ground and keeping an eye on this! I hope Waze users in and around Athlone are benefitting from our collective work.

Now: enjoy your ~10 day break!

++David

Brilliant, thanks for everything, David!

The one-way system is here to stay, however as there is a part of the street that hasn’t been touched yet, I do believe we’re in for some more works and temporary traffic arrangements.

There were some arrangements in place for hotel traffic and for deliveries. Furthermore, I noticed there might be more than a few motorists who don’t follow the one-way system just yet…

I too hope users do enjoy our work, especially as parts of it are being reflected on Google Maps as well. Still, I must commend the county council and the contractors for maintaining access to all shops and businesses, and for decent signage throughout this project - so even without Waze, motorists shouldn’t have too many surprises.

Thanks, David :slight_smile: Sitting in the plane RN and waiting for takeoff…

Cheers
Gal

'morning Gal,

My reminder to check whether anything’s changed just woke me up, so: has anything changed lately in Athlone? I think you mentioned that you thought there were more changes to come, because there were parts of the street that hadn’t had any work started on them yet.

thanks,

++David

Hi David,

There weren’t any changes lately for traffic. Some works are being done on the footpaths, but none is relevant to Waze.

I assume the untouched parts of the street will wait till mid-January then.

Thanks again for keeping an eye on this.
At this time, I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a happy new year :slight_smile: .

Gal

Good stuff - thanks. I’ve reset my reminder to annoy you next until mid January :slight_smile:

Thank you! Have a great break yourself and enjoy your time off work (I hope you’re getting time off!)

++David

Thank you, David! Yes indeed, I won’t be back in town before the 17th of January :wink: .

Have a good one
Gal

'morning Gal,

First: happy new year!

Second: my reminder has just gone off: I see you’re back tomorrow (17 January), so hopefully this doesn’t get lost in what might be a big pile of messages waiting for you.

When you get a chance: has there been any change in the situation around Athlone? Of course, it’s quite possible that nothing much has happened over the last few weeks.

++David

Good evening David,

Happy new year!

Just got back to town and had a quick look around.
I couldn’t notice any relevant changes since the last update. I wonder if works would commence any time soon on the one part that wasn’t touched yet. If so - I’m keeping an eye on it.

Thank you for all your help with this :slight_smile: .

Gal

Cool - thanks for checking.

I’ll reset my reminder to check again for two weeks from today.

++David
