Australian Place Style Guide

I have noticed that the categories are in English (UK). Alternative names used in English will be placed in brackets. Also the Table will now be collapsed by default to not overtake the page.

Looks good. I like that you’ve added the lock levels.

The first two columns look a little cramped. Would it be possible to widen them and take some width off the comments column?

Unfortunately I believe they’re dynamically sized. I’ll look into it though.

Is it worth adding a part to the wiki about whether we should to try add all businesses to the map? Businesses and locations from Google are already searchable in the app. Here is an example of a Google places in the Waze app:

same location after swiping up:

As name and category are the minimum requirements for Places, there is no real benefit in adding new places unless we can fill in more fields than name, address, phone and website. Either that or we know that the Google location is in the wrong place. An example of a situation where possibly need to cross-check Google locations is this UR. The business wasn’t added to Waze, so the Google location was being used (image from Waze Live Map):

The location of the pin meant that the reporter was being sent to the wrong location (image from Waze App):

After adding the business to Waze, here’s the business with the minimum required fields filled:

and the corrected destination:

Wow that’s ambitious!

I think the minimum requirement for places is at least one category, there are some places which are left with no name intentionally (ie land hack to fix display issues). Personally I think we should strive to enter a valid address too unless perhaps it is used for display purposes only/visual aids.

I wasn’t really saying that we needed to add every business. It was just an attempt to get the discussion started. It seems to have worked

I’m not completely sure if the address part of places are used by the app. I’ll have to check this to be sure

Incorrect place details don’t generate as many URs as segments, but I have seen a few more this past fortnight than previous times. Well these are the ones in QLD that pop up in my feed anyway

Based on experiences, the trading hours for many Google Map places do not match the official business website’s.

To help with this, here’s a location from Google Maps that is on the Waze Map but doesn’t have external providers linking:

Here’s the Google location in the app:

What is shown on the Waze Location Page for the place is the same as filling in the following fields in the editor:

Waze already has the place added with the following details:

As a result, here is the Waze location in the app:

Swiping up on the page brings up:

It looks like the only noticeable differences without swiping would be:

  • There may be identical/similar names in the search if the external provider hasn’t been linked:
  • The address on the Waze Location Page may be different
  • Operating hours would be visible for the Waze location

Thanks. You had to screenshot with my profile didn’t you!?

An example of possibly a new business, I quickly checked Google and the it is listed only in it’s Chinese name.

BTW, I will fix this up sometime tomorrow

I’m going to say it was a coincidence…that and it’s hard not to find many places that don’t have your name attached them

You’re right about the Chinese name though:

The same place can be found in the app by searching for Star Chef Equipment and clicking on more results:

The easiest thing to do would be to copy and paste 恆信行 into the external providers section in order to avoid any duplicate listings
