Hello,
I need some advice. I often travel along the route Ljubljana (SLO) -Salzburg-Tittmoning-Babylon-Beroun (CZ). On the B20 highway running through Germany from the Czech border to the Austrian border, there are approximately 4-6 stationary cameras.
I mark them in my routes (when I notice them) as “mobile cameras” because I do not have the authority to mark them as fixed cameras. Question: are there editors in Germany with the necessary level to mark stationary cameras? What is the best way to do this? Thank you for your advice and solution.
Best regards, Sergei
Hi Sergei,
more than likely what you’re seeing aren’t speed cameras but toll enforcement devices. They look like speed cameras but are taller and blue in colour with a green ring - like this one: Google Maps
They are used to monitor the tolling of trucks on German federal roads (B-roads/Bundesstraßen), but they do not enforce speed limits for any vehicle.
You can find more information on these enforcement devices here: Toll Collect | Enforcement on federal trunk roads
As they’re generally not relevant for drivers of cars and motorcycles (the vehicle types supported by Waze) we don’t add them to the map, as stationary cameras or otherwise.
However, since many people, both foreigners and Germans, aren’t familiar with them they are regularly reported as police checks or mobile speed cams.
All actual stationary speed cameras have generally been added to the map, unless they’re very new. Even in that case it usually only takes us a few days to do so.
Best, Tim
Hi Tim,
I have reviewed the materials you sent as well as some others related to this topic. Thank you for clearing up my misconceptions. Now I know that speed cameras in Germany are gray with three or four stripes, while truck toll cameras are blue with stripes and a green one at the bottom.
Is the principle the same in Austria? I saw a blue camera on the road in Salzburg, and Wize warned me it was a speed camera.
By the way, is there any way to see the stationary cameras on the route in advance? Is there any map of stationary speed cameras?
All the best,
Sergei.
Hi, sorry I didn’t see you replied earlier.
A different company operates the toll collection in Austria, so I would assume that they don’t have the same toll cameras. If they’re announced as speed cameras in the Waze app, they probably are ones.
The only way to check the route in advance for stationary speed cameras would be to scroll through the map on the app. The Live Map (the map shown on web browsers) unfortunately doesn’t show speed cameras.
