Some freeway tunnels in Australia use Waze Beacons to aid driver navigation. Beacons are devices installed in tunnels that emit a Bluetooth signal that includes their location information. This is then picked up by the Waze app on a user’s device. Since there is usually no GPS signal in tunnels, the app can use the information from nearby beacons to determine the user’s location inside the tunnel.
After Waze beacons are installed in a tunnel, Waze sets the precise geometry for the tunnel segments on the Waze map. Their geometry is then locked to prevent editing.
Waze Beacons are an opt-in service available to Waze partners who operate tunnels. The installation and maintenance of the beacons is the responsibility of tunnel operators.
See the USA wiki page on tunnels and beacons for more information.
