I started using Waze about 3 days ago, and I’d like to become the AM for the Isle of Sheppey, and eventually Sittingbourne (both in Kent, UK) if no-one takes it. I have sent the email with the link and username like the Wiki says 2 days ago, but I haven’t had a response.
Is there any certain requirements that need to be met to become an AM? I currently do edits for OSM in my area and want to contribute my experience with cartography to Waze, since it has amazing potential (if there are enough users).
I have edited a few roads I have used Waze on, and I know the server is down for maintenance so edits won’t appear yet, but what happens with the AM application stuff?
Yup, I re-sent the email adding a bit at the end saying why I want to become the AM for my area and my experience. I already had the permalink and username so now I’ll play the waiting game I suppose
Thanks for the repsonses, hopefully it won’t be too long so I can crack on with fixing the messed up junctions
Brilliant! I have been given reign over Sheppey and Sittingbourne. Now I can get on with fixing it (a few roundabouts and a bit of the Sheppey side of the A249 is done. Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
I’m a new AM in the Medway Towns, good to see that I’ve got some neighbours! I’m working on updating the mapping for Chatham town centre. There’s a large redevelopment. The Western side of the ring road is now buses and taxis only, and some parts of it have been removed. Instead of a ring it going to be a U
I’ve been an AM for the Medway Towns area for the past few days and I’ve started out by getting some editing practice in my local area, reading the Wiki etc (not necessarily in that order 8-). This is really addictive!
I kept my area quite small, but I’ve noticed that some AM’s seem to have areas quite a bit larger than mine. Surely they can’t be driving their whole area on a regular basis? I wonder if it might be a good idea for us to discuss the places outside of our area that we often visit so’s we can add some experience. For example, I go to Dover quite often and I’ve noticed some problems on the main roads between my area and there. Here’s an example. The client gets quite confused joining and using the A20 between that point and Dover because there are 3 carriageways on the map and one of them doesn’t exist.
There are 3 or 4 quite separate areas where I spend a lot of time driving. I can’t see any reason why an AM shouldn’t have separate, quite disparate areas but as I’m new I thought maybe some of you more experienced folks could advise. What do you think?

Learning all the time, and Wazing a lot of it
So, basically, you can do whatever you want. You can take on whatever areas you’re comfortable with even if there are already other AMs or if those areas are separated by hundreds of miles.
Keep in mind (and I don’t think this is in the wiki yet), but if you have multiple areas then certain features stop working in cartouche. Update requests for sure, and I think pending deletions also.
That is why some people have such large areas, because they have expertise in multiple cities, but the fix to the above issue, is to have one large area instead of multiple smaller ones.
(some people have large areas also, because they have shown expertise, and willingness to take on larger areas to help out in areas where no (active) area managers existed.)
Thanks very much for that, it’s just the sort of advice I was looking for.
I’ve become AM for Dover and Folkestone because there wasn’t one for that area, and some updates are needed. I found some update requests that were well over a year old, railway lines defined as roads, and some primary routes that predate the recent basemap load and are way out of date. I’ve made a start on corrections.
In the last week I’ve been Wazing several times from Medway to Maidstone, Ashford, Dover, Folkestone, and London a couple of times too. Generally it works very well, but in the week or so I’ve been here I’ve noticed route calculations from Medway to London always avoid the A2 because updates are needed following some major roadworks between Medway and the M25. And the M25/A2 junction was a real mess. I can see some update requests there that are a couple of weeks old. I think it’s important that routing errors on primary routes get fixed reasonably quickly.
In order to see update requests for the areas I know well it sounds like it would be better to be AM for a single large area rather than separately defining those towns and cities where I spend a lot of time. In my case that’s North Kent from Folkestone to the M25, except the islands.
Do you know if there will be a fix to the problem whereby multiple AM areas stop update rqeuests being displayed?
Waze is working on a new map editing tool to replace Cartouche. So hopefully this enhancement will be in the new tool at some point. Unlikely that it’s going to get changed in Cartouche.
You still can see all Update Requests everywhere. Just just can’t get a nice list of those in your area if you have multiple areas.
I’m confused again. In Cartouche, you can see them. In a list. And it only shows the ones in your area. I don’t see how what I’m writing isn’t contrary to “Just can’t get a nice list of those in your area” ?
In cartouche you can see them, in a list, if you only have one AM area.
In cartouche you can only see them on the map, if you are not an AM or if you have multiple AM areas
