These parking lots are all for one manufacturing business, WaferTech. As opposed to a shopping center or multiple businesses. I deleted what I felt to be excessive parking lot roads beyond the main entrance (which comes in from the east) and that also routed around the buildings in private areas and to spare entrances that are gated closed 99% of the time. I was attempting to follow best practices for parking lots (https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Best_map_editing_practice#Parking_Lots) to declutter and leave in the simplest roads necessary for visitors and people unfamiliar with the location, to get to the front door and access visitor parking. I also left the remaining roads as Private Road type, because they are behind a guard shack near the entrance, treated it like a gated community.
This problem report appeared there today: “I don’t know who is messing with WaferTech, but stop. You deleted the entire west parking lot. It was fine before! Again, you screwed up my commute.”
Should I have left all those extra roads in? Also I am having a hard time feeling the “screwed up my commute” complaint, it’s not as if while attempting to park at work this person ended up in a ravine or another state. I thought that comment was a little silly.
I have not replied to the map issue report yet until I get some feedback from you guys. It will be positively delightful to perhaps find that this person might be part of our editing community and we can work this out civilly, as I meant no harm.
If the other side was like the one you left i would have just left it, unless like you said was excessive there is no need. Like this.
Also since the business has one entrance for routing you dont have to make it private road unless you could some how be routed into it if you dont work there which doesn’t look like the case. I would just leave it as parking lot road, because it will only route people who work there, not public. If it had a street that had thru access that would be a different story.
As for the report get used to it. People are pretty frustrated when reporting map problems. I had multiple tell me to f -off because Waze or I ruined there commute. Don’t take it personal.
I wrote that. I work here. First of all, this business has more than one entrance. There is a truck entrance and an employee entrance. A short time ago, somebody added a bunch of roads to WaferTech and connected the front parking lots to the back roads. This is what the “screwing up of my commute” comment was about. It started routing me to the truck gate. Yeah, I know not to go to the truck gate, but if I were trying to find the place to do an interview that would cause issues. Personally, I rely on Waze to see when I’m going to arrive for work since I have a long commute. It helps me decide when to leave my house. There is a significant difference in time and route when it routes me to 1st Street as opposed to Parker St. Waze routes me to SR 14 most days. When it was changed, Waze routed me to Mill Plain. Thinking that there was traffic on SR 14, I went Mill Plain only to find that it was routing me to the truck gate and there was nothing wrong with my normal commute.
So, to fix the issue, I disconnected the new roads and deleted a couple for clean-up. Then, last night as I get to work, I see the back roads were nuked. I don’t see why. I can’t fix it because 1st street is level 3. Here’s the problem: some truck drivers also use Waze to go to the back gate and see where they are supposed to go. There are multiple places for deliveries here. That’s all gone now.
So, yeah, I’m a little upset. I had a back and forth on this area a few years ago and the final product was pretty much what we all could live with. It worked. The back area was restricted to trucks only so cars wouldn’t be routed there. Somebody had connected the roads through the locked gates and that was fixed. Now, that work is all gone and I can’t fix it. So, there you go. It worked. Now it doesn’t, especially for truck drivers. That’s why I wrote that. Forgive me for my tone, but I am frustrated with it.
I removed the report (it was my report). I’d like the back roads fixed at some point please. The parking lot is good the way it is right now.
Before deleting what we consider superfluous roads, might it be a good idea to send a PM to the last editor of the road? With PLRs, they are not imported but created, and in the case of PLRs associated with a corporate facility, rather than a mall, often times people map them for a specific reason. Perhaps a discussion could be initiated, letting the original editor, who might very well be the user of those roads, know your intentions. It may add a delay to implementing desired changes, but it also could stop unintentionally messing with someone’s commute, both to and FROM a location.
I’ve mapped the access roads in the UPS facility. Highly unlikely most of the Wazing public will use my roads. For me, however, not only is it beneficial to have close to accurate ETA (which I often use when letting dispatch know when I expect to actually be at the location of my hub where I will punch out, and not just driving by the front of the facility), but I also value the miles Waze gives me, as I often enter those ahead of time in certain situations. I’ve been doing this long enough that I pretty much knew the distances down to a tenth of a mile before Waze, but it is still useful.
The main reason I created the roads, though actually deal with LEAVING the facility. I’d enter my destination in and often Waze would route me a certain way because it had snapped me to the closest street and assumed I was going a certain way, which it wouldn’t have if it wasn’t made “biased” in routing because I wasn’t prematurely snapped on the road. I had gotten caught in several major road delays due to accidents on the Interstate I use to get to my delivery route that would be avoided now because Waze routes me starting on the PLR I’ve created, and not on the street first.
Alright before we go editing all these roads you guys need to understand the road types and how they work, making a private road is the highest penalty there when routing cars. Only use for private installations like closed communities or military bases.
For this case if that road isn’t a street name then leaving it a PLR will have enough penalties to make it so public wont route through it driving on the streets near by the business. As for the back road that’s trucks only it should have a road restriction to all vehicles except trucks in that case.
Only the main PLR need to be mapped, nothing else. We dont need a BBQ grill there. Excessive PLR cause more stress on the server and even routing issues depending on the severity. I currenty do not have access to the area. But i can help @squad96 or @snarfvader discuss how to fix the PLR to what is needed so @snarfvader can be routed to work correctly.
Thanks for the feedback, all. I want to make it right, SV. If you will slap in a few rough PLRs to give me an idea of what you need back, I will put in the time after to fine tune and set the restrictions, and will also take responsibility for obtaining unlocks to restore attachments above my grade.
I’m heading into work. I’ll rough it in when I get home tomorrow morning. If you want to do the back tonight, it’s not a big deal. If it’s level 2 or less, I can fine tune it. I would’ve done it, but I couldn’t attach the roads back to 1st Street. Restrictions need to be truck and hazmat only. Just don’t attach the front and the back areas and Waze will route it fine. If there’s a speed limit option, 20mph is the site speed.
Sorry I made the report like that, but it did get your attention. Thanks.
I went ahead and took a shot at it and I think they are all back.
All roads around WaferTech are now PLR, and all of the back roads have all vehicle type restrictions except trucks and haz mat.
I don’t see any two-segment loops at this point.
I was going to request an unlock for Lake Road to enable turns onto the restricted PLRs but I am not sure that makes sense. I have not yet seen a setting in the app to define what kind of vehicle I am driving. Is there such a setting? I assume that if not, then routing penalties will be so high that no one is ever likely to be routed onto those back roads from Lake, thus turn permissions become irrelevant when entering, the truck drivers are going to go where they need to go regardless of turn permissions). On the flip side, exiting turn permissions to Lake/1st are all allowed, so trucks navigating out will be routed correctly (assuming they are going to a gate that was opened for them).
No worries about the tone of the report. It did get my attention, and it wasn’t personal, just an understandably frustrating moment that I now understand better.
I fine tuned it to match the reality of the roads back there. I deleted 4 segments that went through unused gates and moved the west section so it went under the pipe bridge. Everything else looks good. Thanks a bunch! I appreciate it.
As far as the restrictions for the turns based on vehicle type, I’m not actually sure if they do anything yet. I always included them because of possible future use in the app. But, come to think of it, when the road was accidentally connected, the app did try and route me through the back. I’d leave it like it is for now.
If you do want to add turns, the business across Lake Rd from the truck entrance is open now and there is a small parking lot there. Address is 4857 NW Lake Rd. It’s called SafeFire.
