Waze has developed a way to make routing avoid going out of a country and back in when your start location and destination are in the same country. By default it is not activated, but we could ask Waze to enable it.
I am thinking about doing a survey on the Waze Switzerland Facebook Page about this question so that a maximum of Wazers can give their opinion:
What do you think about the idea?
I could handle a french translation, but could someone give me a german and an italian translation?
DE:
Wenn ich im Grenzgebiet unterwegs bin, bevorzuge ich …
… eine langsamere Route die auf Schweizer Boden bleibt
… eine schnellere Route die zweimal über die Grenze geht (Raus und wieder zurück in die CH)
IT:
Viaggiando in vicinanza del confine, preferisco:
… un tragitto più lento, ma che rimane sul territorio svizzero
… un tragitto più veloce che attraversa due volte il confine (uscendo e rientrando in Svizzera)
I personally don’t think we should enable it.
Around Schaffhausen for example it’s very common to drive through Germany and back.
Or maybe we can tweak it ? For example if it’s <10 minutes faster then avoid ?
From what I understood it is a setting for everyone and cannot be individually chosen.
But depening on the survey results we will see if we need to discuss with staff about an in-app option or if there is a clear majority, the numbers will also help to argument with staff if it’s around 50-50 we can prove that it cannot be decided the same for the whole country and we will have more weight to ask for an in-app setting.
I don’t know, what to select. I wish to avoid crossing the border if it’s just for <10min, but if it’s really faster (10-30 min), then I would. Could waze also offer such an option?
With quite open borders I don’t care. However, I understand that in some circumstances (Military, weapon in car) it’s better to avoid crossing the border.
Like everything in Waze, the border-crossing avoidance would probably be a time-based penalty. So maybe they can set that amount per country but then we’d need another survey to ask people about after how long (5-10-15min faster) they would like Waze to let them pass.
I’ll try to get some answers from staff about details. In any case the results so far are more towards allowing to cross the border twice, so it seems we could end up just not changing anything and leave things as they are now and always have been.
Got some info, most of the feature is ready but they’ve got details to check and test first.
I also asked a few question about how customizable it is (per-user or same for all? Penalty of how many minutes? Can the penalty default value be changed per-country? etc…)
They will have to look into it and get back to us, they will also make an official announcement to Champs and Coordinators with more details about the feature once it’s fully ready.
I closed the survey after a few days, we got 150 responders in total.
Here are the details per language, seems like french, german and italian speakers agree with eachother towards the end result, while english speakers are more towards 50-50:
