Calculate average speed over route

Hello

Very much enjoying Waze so far. I can see my recent routes on my dashboard, including the end time of a drive, and distance travelled. I cannot see the start time. Am I just missing a hidden link somewhere?

If I had a start time too, I could work out average speed for a similar drive (I think Waze will be great for commuting) and see which days have best average speeds / which routes have best average speeds. Cherry on the cake: average speed for each recent route calculated automatically.

I could log this stuff myself but a major advantage of a “commuting” app would be to do just this - see best/worst days of the week, see if earlier/later start times change average speeds, etc.

Regards,
-Simon

Open the new editor (WME) and look at your drives? It has distance and time. Or click on the Show Route link on your dashboard and click the head and tail of your drive in the old editor.

I did look at my drives in the old editor. It’s not immediately obvious how you could see times for start & finish.

Looked again now following your comment

Here’s the résumé:

  • The “old” editor allows you to select a segment of the route and see timestamps (based on UTC it would seem, not my local timezone) but this means quite a lot of time required just to see the start time of a trip already shown on the dashboard. The other information (end time, total distance) has to be gleaned from the dashboard or from the other end of your route since the widget in the map editor with the route list does not show a start or end time and displays just drive end date…

  • The new editor shows, but not in an obvious place as you have to click a few times*, routes with enough information to work out average speed: distance travelled and journey time (in hours and minutes, rounded to integer). This will give a rough average speed with a simple multiplication.

  • Here’s the click journey to get there :

-> Click “show route” on the dashboard
-> Click “try out the new map editor”
-> Click “my places”
-> Click “drives”
-> Multiply distance travelled by 60, and divide by time (hours * 60 + minutes) travelling :geek:

All that to work out that my average speed on this morning’s commute was: 11.64km/h or 7.23mph :expressionless:

Is there an API / could I contribute code for the dashboard?

p.s. Maybe I’m just a little too hung up with average speed, though in my favour I could say that in-car trip computers have had average speed and distance as default for a long time. Only reason I don’t reset mine every time I get in the car, to get average speed each morning/evening, is that range (on remaining fuel) is very inaccurate for first 40km or so, as is fuel economy - which I’d rather calculate for an average tank and not an average journey anyway.
