Calgary - Crowchild Trail NW

Greetings. I just finished changing Hwy 1A between Calgary & Cochrane to “Major Highway” from Minor, to stay consistent with the 2/2A relationship and because it’s now 4-lane divided all the way to Cochrane.

It got me thinking about what the road type should be once it enters the city and becomes Crowchild Trail. Crowchild Trail between the NW city limits and 32 Ave NW is very similar to Glenmore Trail in the south (which was recently changed to Major Highway) i.e. 80km/h and no at-grade intersections, and there are no more-major roads in NW Calgary. Should we change it to Major Highway for that stretch?

It would make the map look nice to change it all the way to Glenmore, but Crowchild does get quite slow for the section between 32 Ave NW and Bow Trail SW so that might not make sense.

Thoughts?

I think your reasoning makes sense – my only question is whether it retains the highway designation (i.e. is it still Hwy 1A once it becomes Crowchild?).

Yes, good point. The road signs at Sarcee, 53 St, Shaganappi, & 32 Ave all feature the “1A” prominently, even though we haven’t included it in our ramp names at the moment. I’m not sure if it extends south of there. Definitely not south of city centre.

Well, I’d say that it definitely should be upgraded to MH wherever it is indeed 1A – and those ramp names should also be updated to include “Hwy 1A” if the shield / name is on the ramp signs.

Agreed. Thinking of it in this way, it makes sense to change it until it meets 16 Ave / Hwy 1. Of course Hwy 1 and Hwy 1A would connect… duh…

I’ll gladly do whatever I can, but much of it is locked to level 5, including many of the ramps. Any chance you’d like to work on lowering them to level 3? Should I post in the unlocks forum?

Unlocked to Level 3.

Once you have the ramp names fixed up let me know so I can relock them to ‘5’.

Thanks. I’ve started on it and will continue as I can, but I’m being thorough double-checking the signs on street view for each one, and that’s a lot of ramps!

I’m just about done the Stoney Trail interchange, which was missing Hwy 201 references on all the ramps to Stoney Trail, in addition to the Hwy 1A updates. One more thing: would you mind unlocking these segments of Stoney Trail as well? The way the ramps connect right now is incorrect.

Unlocked to ‘3’.

Let me know when you’re done with them and I’ll bump that back up.

OK, I’m done with those Stoney Trail segments, and everything else at the Crowchild / Stoney interchange. Go ahead and re-lock anything you think needs it in that area. I’ll continue working my way SE down Crowchild checking ramp names.

OK, I think I’m all finished with the Sarcee/Crowchild interchange.

However, something weird seems to be happening with some turn restrictions back at Stoney Trail, and at Nose Hill Dr. This node and this node should have all turns allowed, and I’m pretty sure they were OK yesterday. I was able to fix the one at Nose Hill but it was strange because at first it didn’t even come up with a node # when I clicked on it, and no allow/disallow buttons.

Really strange.

I’ve fixed them now – hopefully they stick.

Still working on this whenever I get a chance. It’s not just adding “1A” to some of them - there was a lot of work to do! I’m surprised we didn’t get more UR from confused drivers in this area.

If you’d like to do some more re-locking, I’m done at Crowchild & 53 St and at Crowchild & Shaganappi and at Crowchild & Northland/40/Brisebois.
