the intersection id like to avoid is in oyster bay ny, 11771 and its where w main meets W shore road, lane ave and mill hill road and it can be very busy and very hard to navigate.
i have the “avoid difficult intersections” enabled but my routes always take me thru this area
thanks!
My personal recommendation for this would be after you enter the address, once the route is ready, click the arrow on the lower right to display the alternate routes available and if it’s showing, choose the route that excludes the bad intersection.
Hi usa_4gj2kqcj,
Difficult Turns (DT) aren’t automatically recognized by Waze. Since it is somewhat of a subjective matter, we manually add DTs for specific turns that users report after analysis.
That being said, I did some route analysis on the intersection, and it appears the worst culprit is making a left turn from Lake Ave to either Mill Hill or W Shore Rd. Let me know if this assessment is accurate, and if you believe a DT flag would be beneficial here.
We wouldn’t add a DT on the routing from W Shore Rd making a left, since there is a dedicated LT lane which allows for the timing to be baked in.
Yes that left from mill hill and going from lake Ave to west shore can be really tough when traffic is higher like rush hours and beach weekends
Thanks
My question to him and you is when you check the alternate routes do any of them route you that avoids that intersection before you start changing program routing?
This is the area in question.
There are routes that would bypass this intersection if the Lefts in question were marked difficult, which doesn’t prevent routing, just applies a higher penalty. Your question makes sense in that, would a driver reasonably assume Waze had a better route if you were directed via Cleft Rd to go NB on W Shore.
As a non-local, the only viable alternative seems a bit excessive, and may not be enough to outweigh the penalty. Testing a route, it takes 8m42s on Monday at 5 PM to go from Mill Hill Rd/Glen Cove Rd to Cleft Rd/W Shore Rd via Cleft Rd (i.e. the long way 'round) vs 3m21s to go via the difficult intersection.
