Car Parks and how to appropriately map?

I’m finding a lot of car parks simply unmapped.

It’s useful to have car parks for Asda, Tesco etc surely but is it verging on pointless? I’m adding appropriate car parks on industrial / retail estates where it makes sense.

But where do you draw the line, as from a user perspective, I’m effectively doubling the listings available to choose from? Suppose its very useful for the “car parks nearby” feature in app?

I understand that the best practises have changed over time so would appreciate opinions and guidance!

Cheers,
Leon.

All car parks usable by the public should be mapped.
We stopped doing shop car parks as there is an option for ticking Customer Parking against the shop details HOWEVER the project to add these into Waze was stopped a few years ago and so it does not do much now. Because of this we are back to adding the shop as a place and then adding the car park as a second place. This then works.
Just remember not to add every lane inside the car park!

I don’t think there has ever been a final consensus on what type of car parks to map.

Personally, I don’t bother mapping Supermarket car parks or private business car parks. I’ve only ever mapped public car parks i.e. Council run, NCP type, or Shopping Centres. Usually, those that are pay and display or pay on exit (or even free). Places like hospitals can also be mapped with car parks and usually marking them with ‘visitor’ helps.

Supermarket car parks should be mapped if they offer non-customers to park there (usually at a cost), but if it’s just for customers I wouldn’t bother.

Others may disagree with what I’m saying.
