Okay I figured I’d post this here and get some feedback before changing things on my own. Excuse my clumsy efforts to point you around on the map. This is the area in question:
At the highlighted segment, US 64 continues west on Murray Dr, labeled as “US-64 Truck Bypass”. The old US-64 is Broadway AVE and is labeled on the signs as US-64 Business Route.
This is where Murray Meets back up with Main street/Broadway ave. The signs say the same thing, that Broadway (what is labeled as 64 now) is the business route, and the highway takes Murray as the truck bypass.
I’d get your local higher levels. To be honest none of 64 through that area really looks like Major Hwy, it should all (both the main 64 down Main and Broadway and the Truck Bypass) be classified as minor Hwy rather than primary route. Neither should any of those roads be split. But Vectorspace did go over those roads just last Sept, so get his permission/approval before making any changes to 64.
So don’t change anything on those routes. There is plenty of work to be done in Farmington itself. There are roads with no-directionality, soft turns and unterminated dead end’s galore. Leave the major routes alone unless they are throwing UR’s.
I will agree that Murray (aka the truck bypass) should also be a minor Hwy rather than a primary route. I know a few truckers who use waze as well as their industry GPS systems and that categorization will make Waze ignore the much faster truck bypass.
Yeah, I’ve been fixing the roads in farmington slowly and surely, I was overwhelmed first, but I started picking small sections and focusing on them until they are done.
What is a UR? I keep looking but can’t find the definition for it!
I only brought up the highway thing because it is the biggest thing that stands out when you’re looking at the map, so it keeps bugging me.
There are no local higher levels here that I can see, just vectorspace, but I’ll be working with him on getting the gremlins out of Farmington!
User Report, Basically when a user reports a problem with the map or the directions from within the app or from the livemap.
There may not be any immediate to Farmington, but look for other NM and perhaps a few CO editors. I’m not familiar with that area at all. Oh and once you get Farmington cleaned up Aztec needs work as well.
Yeah it’s on my list of things to do, take a little drive so Aztec and Bloomfield show up as being editable, and then work on Kirtland, Shiprock and probably Durango/Cortez!
It surprises me there’s not more UR’s then from Farmington, as much as I’ve had to fix! :geek:
Agree the area needs work. I had been touching it once in a while while I could. It was in a lot worse shape a year ago. The whole US-64 thing was messed up. Someone split it. I unsplit parts of it, but other parts have characteristics that are sufficient for splitting, so I didn’t unsplit everything. For instance, you have sufficiently separate GPS tracks for the directions. I really hate split roads in cities without wide dividers because there are so many ways to turn across the lanes, and that creates URs.
Let me look at the bypass thing a bit more and reply with my suggestions. I actually don’t mind trying different things if they seem to work better in the map and client. Since you’re relatively new at this and we don’t want to disrupt service on a major route, let’s take our (your) time.
Lot of issues exist in the neighborhoods as well. I was just mapping new roads there a couple days ago when I saw some URs. More in a bit…
For example, when I drive to work, Waze tells me to turn right onto “US-64” when it is actually Broadway Ave, no signage for 64 exists anymore on Broadway, not even Business 64 signs. I know the difference, but your average user may not.
Google Navigation says Broadway as opposed to 64, but I’ll verify later. Looking at Farmington from high up, it should be obvious in my opinion that Murray is the new throughway.
I did unsplit my first road in a random residential area. It makes sense to leave it split if there’s good gps tracks. I’m not so concerned about the splitting right now as I am the labeling.
Interesting, I haven’t seen any UR’s! I’ve been slowly slogging through the neighborhood issues, I have mapped out three brand new residential areas that must bave been built since the basemap data.
I found the WME Validator addon and it really helps to find stuff.
Why don’t you go ahead and start renaming things as you think best on the ground and from your experiments seeing how voice navigation prompts come up on Waze. You’re in a much better position to do what makes sense locally.
As a discussion point In general though, I have tended to favor an attempt to optimize Waze for the visiting traveler rather than local. Many small towns call their main highway “Main Street” as it goes through town, but it is not clear to me it should be labeled that in Waze when for a majority of travelers, it is the highway, not Main Street. I think this bias is usually correct, but if I made a change a year or more ago, or that is the way it was originally, it is certainly fine to try a different way since we have you on the ground to adjust it so that it works best for all Wazers.
Let me know how I can help. We can also use livemap to do some test routes through it to make sure things are working well.
Thanks Vector, I’m just trying not to step on any toes!
It does make sense to optimize Waze for people passing through, In this case you’d have main street (which is slow, a lot of lights), broadway (many people use this to bypass main) and then Murray that bypasses town.
The ideal setup would be for Waze to route people through the new Highway 64 (Murray) if they’re going East or West on 64. The NMDOT signs out on the highway in both directions support this.
If you’re going west from Aztec, or east to Aztec from say, Kirtland, it would probably make more sense to route people down Broadway, skipping main street. Hmm.
How does Waze route? I have not seen that there is a problem. I tried it in live map, and Waze prefers Murry (new 64) over the other potential routes, which is what you think should happen. So, it seems it already works. Do you have another experience?
The traffic data that builds up over time will have Waze route the best in general or with real time issues that might make something more attractive.
Ah, that’s probably because the directional issues are fixed now. A few days ago I tried and it tried going up Broadway.
In this case then it’d just be for names. Highway 64 is Murray, so going through down and being told to turn on 64 when it is actually Broadway is weird. But I’ll get that fixed soon.
In other news, I fixed Farmington -> Aztec routing on highway 516
