City Naming

Hi all,

I just wanted to post a note about city naming, especially in the Lower Mainland.

Per the wiki, cities should NOT have the province identifier in them. So, the following are good:
Vancouver
Abbotsford
Burnaby

While these aren’t:
Vancouver, BC
Abbotsford, BC
Burnaby, British Columbia

Unfortunately, there are two cities whose names seem to conflict with others in Canada: Port Moody and Maple Ridge.

These two should get the “, BC” after them:
Port Moody, BC
Maple Ridge, BC

but only until we can get the Waze staff to resolve this.

In the meantime, I’m working on streamlining these and would appreciate it if y’all could be working towards the same goal. Thanks!

I’ve noticed when searching for an address in Vancouver it will often list the neighbourhood as well

Eg 2164 Kitchener Street, Grandview-Woodland, Vancouver

Seeing as this doesn’t fit the Canada Post conventions and would probably just confuse those with no knowledge of our 'hoods, is it possible to change this?

Bcmedic: that looks like a Bing issue… You would need to submit that update request to them. :frowning:

That’s exactly why I never try to search by address… Right now that functionality is very broken.

Ah, good to know, just starting with Waze, but eager to contribute.

I also see that “British Columbia” is available to the drop down “state” box, does this remove the need for the adding of BC in the city name field?

Yes indeed.
Use the “state” option and do-not write the state-name in the city line.

I have a question regarding this for a different Province, that may also be relevant to the problem described here.

When trying to fix some city names I noticed that Waze will not accept some for unknown reasons.
I used the correct Province name and it’s rejecting the suggested name, without the Province code.

Who should I contact with my list of problematic cities I came across?

Cheers,
Hagay.

Hagay,

I’m having the same/similar trouble with Port Moody and Maple Ridge.

In fact, when I try entering just “Maple Ridge”, it accepts it, then upon save, becomes “Maple Ridge, British Columbia” in the city name (resulting in “Maple Ridge, British Columbia, British Columbia”)

I’ve just been dealing with it until now… but perhaps someone technical at Waze can look directly at the database and see what’s messing these things up for us…

I have found 5 different cities in Ontario that are giving me troubles.
I bet there are more.

I hope Waze staff could tell us how to solve these.

Cheers,
Hagay.

I have reported several such segments to Yonatan, and he has sent them on to the DEV team to try to find out what’s going on with them. If you have more specific segments that have this problem, please reply with permalinks, and I’ll add them to the list that we have in the support area. Perhaps with more segments exhibiting this unacceptable behaviour ;), they might be able to see a common link and find a cure for this problem.
