Coldwater Canyon, Los Angeles, one month closure

Coldwater Canyon, a major commuting thoroughfare in L.A. County, will have a full closure in both directions from Ventura Blvd. to Mulholland, for the period March 23 to April 24, 2013, during the hours 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. It will have limited access from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

The area is outside my editing area. Could someone make the necessary edits?

Even though there will be limited access overnight, the majority of use is by commuters during the day and the closure will cause major traffic jams for those who aren’t aware of the closures and alternate routes.

Thank you.

Sounds like an opportunity for Waze’s “Road Closed” report…

I don’t think a one-month closure is “long-term,” either.

Do we know how long is long term?

I changed the title. The closure is from March 23 to April 25, 2013.

According to Wiki, if the closures will last for more than a few days, the map should be edited.

This is the same issue that DC has with the time restricted roads. If it was a full closure we would just disconnect it, but it is not a full closure. So currently we have no easy way to handle this issue…

Now thinking about this and looking at the route, I have changed it to a private road, so residents can still get home or leave home, but everybody else will not get routed over it…

I need to know if it opens earlier so I can change it back.

Jemay – THANK YOU. I was hoping you would weigh in.

I will calendar the opening and will check every week or so to track progress, and will send you a PM when it is reopened.

Remember that the change will take about two days to be live…

Thanks

Did you intend to leave the segments between Halkirk Avenue and Ventura Blvd. as a primary street?

Also, the turn from Coldwater onto Ventura should be changed.

From the DWP notice: “During non-working hours, there will be no left turn from Coldwater Canyon Ave. north or south onto Ventura Blvd.”

Thank you very much. You’ve eliminated many headaches and frustrated drivers. This is predicted to have nearly as much impact as “Carmegeddon” (the 405 closure).

Yes, I only did the section that would not have other possible routes to mess up (locally for the canyon). The section you stated, if I change that, the residents could get strange routes coming or going. What I did is not normal and in this case it should work. I don’t want to touch the turn restrictions, that is a time based issue, and for this I think we should just leave it.

I have not driven that canyon in a very long time, so I did not know exactly where/when/how much of the closure was going to have on the canyon, I was hoping a more local editor would ask or chime in - THANKS!

Oh, that makes perfect sense. Thanks very much for the explanation.

FYI, I have changed the street back to Primary (back on April 23), so I have not noticed any major issues, please verify all is ok. I am not sure if the turn restriction are still correct at this time or not for the intersection of Coldwater Canyon Ave and Ventura Blvd?
