Dartford Crossing (Toll) Trying To Avoid Not Working

Can someone look into the reason why Queen Elizabeth Bridge, Dartford Crossing (Toll) is showing as a route when Avoid Toll Roads has been selected.

Route I have chosen is Lymington - Prince Regent Lane, London E13.

Because avoid tolls is not absolute.

In the first case, if your destination is unreachable without incurring a toll (e.g. in central London when the CCZ is active) you will be given a toll route.

Secondly, you will get a toll route if no other route is practical. Say you ask for a route from Dartford to Thurrock, you might only get a route through the Dartford Crossing because all other routes are much too long.

Thirdly, and in your case, it isn’t the primary route you’ve been offered - it’s an alternate route. If you have avoid tolls on, Waze won’t generally offer you a toll route as primary, but will offer it as an alternate. This is probably a good thing as it allows you to evaluate the benefits of using a toll route to save time but pay money. If you look at the List view of your routes, you should see that route has a Toll marker on the screen.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I’ve been searching for something similar.

Is it not possible to add the Dartford toll as an exemption to the avoid tolls like we can with ULEZ?

Thanks

I expect iainhouse will be along with the definitive answer in due course, but I’ll have a go now.

I think the Waze option for ULEZ is a different kind of thing. ULEZ applies to some types of vehicle and not to others. Waze is allowing you to specify whether it applies to your vehicle or not.

This sort of thing - charges or prohibitions applying to some vehicles and not others - is quite common world wide, and the Waze developers have built function to cope with it. This has been implemented here for the ULEZ.

With the Dartford Crossing, this is a toll that applies to all types of vehicle. What I think you are asking for is some more choice in the “avoid toll” setting, so that you could have a different settings for avoiding the Dartford Toll and avoiding other tolls in general. So far as I am aware, this function does not exist.

I suppose it might be possible to fiddle the charge question to ask about the Dartford Crossing, but not easy. We’d have to add a question asking whether you/your vehicle had a free pass for the Dartford Toll. You’d have to lie and say “yes”. Not an easy thing to explain to a new user.

If Waze were to develop toll avoidance further, and afaik they have no such plans, I’d rather they added a price/time slider. I’d like to be able to specify - for all tolls - how much I am prepared to pay for each minute saved. Personally, where I live, I find the Dartford Crossing saves half an hour or more on many journeys, so have “avoid tolls” off. I then get annoyed when Waze tries to take me on the extortionate M6 Toll to save a couple of minutes against the proper M6. I’d like to be able to set a Waze toll-avoidance slider to, say, 50p per minute, so that I’d continue to get the Dartford Crossing route when it saves 4 minutes (in practise all the time for me), but would only get the M6 Toll when it would save around 13 minutes or more.

Ian

I do not think this is possible, however…

With the Dartford crossing it requires a Dart tag or whatever it is called now, or pay by midnight manually etc. same as the Merseyflow and probably others.

It would perhaps be nice if Waze could recognise such tags as it does with other toll schemes and then have tolls off where a toll pass didn’t exist. i.e. where you must pay cash or pay manually after crossing.

Then your example of the M6 Toll would not give you that route, but it would on the Dartford Crossing if you had registered the Dart in Waze.

Hope that makes sense.

Indeed, living in Runcorn I have a free toll pass for the Mersey Gateway. I have to have Avoid Toll off when travelling from Home, then then I have to enable it depending where I’m going, usually down the M6 to avoid the M6 Toll, or Newcastle to avoid the Tyne Tunnel. Not ideal.

Good Afternoon all,

My apologies for resurrecting this thread but i should point out that waze has the toll times added to it.
So if you will pass the toll, in this case, Dartford crossing after 10PM to 6AM the toll does not apply.

I notice from the screen shot these routes were calculated at 21:37 with a journey time of over 2 hours.
So by the time you actually arrived at Dartford it would have been around 23:00 i.e a free time.

I thought i would reply in place of ian as the post is a little old now. I hope this helps clear this up.

So glad to see Dart Tag has been added to Waze now!! Thanks!!
