Dead End Nodes U-Turn Enabled?

I’ve just installed the WME Validator script, and it has reported quite a few places in New Plymouth.

One of them being End Nodes which are enabled for U-Turn.

According to the wiki ( https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat=-39.03363&lon=174.12682&env=row&layers=TBFTTFTTTTFTTFTTTTTTTTTTTTT&segments=235564263 ), these should be set to off. However someone (level 4) in November has been changing them to enabled.

Do we have an official stance on if U-Turns at the end of a dead end street should be on or off?

And does anyone know of a tool to quickly correct these in bulk?

AFAIK those u-turns should be disabled worldwide.
I haven’t heard out a script for that. Just do it by hand…

I’ve found that enabling u-turns at the end of a dead end road will route someone to the end of the road only to turn around. In fact, I had a hilarious incident where my sister had this happen to her, but she didn’t know it was a dead end. So, she sent a UR which I promptly answered. She thought her reports went straight to me and was worried about someone following her until I showed her that the report was anonymous and I never would have known who it was if she didn’t text me a few minutes later.

All that to say, u-turns off as the Wiki says.

Yeah, I would but there are a LOT of them and all done by a CM (at least I think they are a CM, level 4 at least) which is why I thought we must be doing something different in New Zealand.

CM is Level 5

who?

I’d send a PM to the editor…
Sending him a link to the wiki, where u-turns are described.

I searched a while, but couldn’t find it in the NZ-Wiki.
But I’ve found it in the US-Wiki.

Someone have a talk to that lad

On a serious note, you would think when waze introduces a new feature the would explain how and when to use it.

Its kind of Chinese whispers at the moment

Or at least make it so you cant get confused by what it does, if routing wont work well with it then don’t let it be added.

I initially did look at it and thought oh, you could turn around here so set it. But then when I noticied existing roads did not have it set I changed my assumption, as if it was designed to allow turning points then the default would likely have been soft on (Although the default is still one way instead of unknown or soft two way for new roads so maybe that logic is flawed to).

Caveat: I am a developer so I know that adding features is cool, documenting how you use them is left up to someone else to work out. The number of times I’ve added something intended to be used one way and people find a completely different way or use for it.

I wonder if the intention was to do it on small culdesacs or roads where there is not a lot of room to turn around.

Ive just been going through the list and it looks like there have been a couple of other level 1 editors setting the U-Turn on the nodes. So it maybe something to look out for in other areas (if your not already).

On the plus side it looks like little old New Plymouth has a few new Wazers editing the map

New map editors everywhere

Senior editors need to keep on eye on them.

Stop wholesale dual carriageways. Next they will start dual carriage normal roads :frowning:

Sorry I have also been setting U-Turn on at the end of few dead end roads, I’ll fix them and stop doing it from now on.

Team: If you have been following this thread about u-turns and and dead end roads, the wiki is a bit fuzzy as to how we need to deal with this.

Ispyisail and myself have decided that (until the Wiki is updated and clarity is made regarding u-turns), that we DO NOT use U-Turns on Dead End Roads or any other Segments in New Zealand.
Setting a U-Turn only confuses routing, so it serves no point here in NZ.

If there is any question, or clarification needed regarding the roads and U-Turns, please post in this forum.

Thanks
Pete
