Default speed limit reduced in City/County of Denver

Following a city ordinance passed in 2021, and signage that began to be posted in 2023, the speed limit on all city streets in Denver is 20 MPH unless otherwise posted, a reduction from the previous limit of 25 MPH. (see Denver Installs First 20mph Speed Limit Sign on Local Streets). Waze is still displaying speed limits of 25 MPH on most side streets.

Regardless of what speeds drivers are actually driving, Waze should be showing the legal limit. I hope there is some way to make a citywide change…

Thanks for your message. Yes editors are aware of the city-wide 20mph speed limit change. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to update speed limits city-wide. As you know, if there is a posted 25mph speed limit, then the limit should not change. So we can’t just make a blanket update to all segments. And there is no way to do that in the Waze map editor. Volunteers would have to individually edit every road segment in the city.

But we are reminding editors to check the speed limit when they are editing residential streets in Denver.
