All, we need to make a push now to drive up Waze adoption in Cyprus to reduce the risk of many citizens inadvertently losing their license due to speed cameras being put in place, mostly in areas where there is no history of fatalities or accidents and at the same time while reducing the speeds at which one gets a fine. The temporary fix is marking the cameras as police but it feels like a very temporary solution. Ideally we should be able to mark fixed camera installations, mobile camera vans and police traps separately. I’m not advocating illegal behaviour - I would be all for cameras if they were followed with transparency as to what they are doing to reduce serious accidents or fatalities. My prediction is that their current placement and the incentives to the private entities running them can only result in zero or worse impact of fatalities and serious accidents.
accidents. So taxpayers pay tens of millions, it goes in few private pockets and the result is same taxpayers get fined while no reduction in real risk or any social good (unless obedience itself is a social good).
Hiya, Yanis here, one of the country coordinators for Cyprus.
Temporary speed cameras like mobile vans and police traps should be reported as Police via the app. This way the report ranking system determines if a report needs to stay visible for longer or go away.
Permanent speed cameras can only be added in WME (the Map Editor) by Level 5 editors. They are specifically set for a certain travelling direction and specific speed. I can help you add them - please put map comments in WME at the exact location specifying the direction.
If you need a hand on how to do that, let me know and I’ll happily explain in more detail.
