the first question I’d ask myself is, do you find it gets a lot of URs or auto MPs? Second is does routing try a lot of restricted turns?
if the answer to those is yes, then I would split the carriageways, if not then I don’t think I would bother as it would be a lot of work and probably not bring any value to the map. On the other hand, if you are bored with nothing else to do then why not… although I didn’t say that
I’m sure a CM will jump in now with the correct answer and then shout at me!
The app user is unlikely to notice whether the lanes are split on the map or not, unless they are yards apart.
So it comes down to what makes it easiest to maintain the map.
If there are a lot of junctions where the side road only access one side of the dual carriageway (i.e. there’s no break in the central reservation), then it makes the editor’s life easier if the lanes are split.
If there are a lot of junctions where it is possible to cross the central reservation, then having the roads split makes the map a lot more complicated, and a single road would be a lot easier to edit.
I can’t remember who said it, but Waze is for getting drivers from A to B, not about mapping the exact road layout. Less is definitely best when having to maintain the map. Filter lanes, dual carriageways etc look very nice in the editor but if they don’t add any value for the user they’re just extra work to maintain.
I’d read that a different way as in physical barrier (Concrete) meaning wall, the sort that are replacing Armco barriers on a lot of the motorways or some other barrier that can’t be driven over in a normal car.
When it’s just a concrete kerb I apply rule number 1 and 2
It would be “simpler” not being split. But if you look at the road there is a raised kerb in the middle for quite a distance, including past a private road (not mapped) which “could” justify there being a dual carriageway.
Thinking ahead and to that maybe implementation of “Lane Control” then I suspect the roads should be dual. But then, when will we really get lane control!!! There are obviously other things on the minds of the dev’s at Waze HQ that are more important then actual basic functionality…
As a driver I would expect any sat nav to accurately depict the carriageway. If the carriageway is split by a clear physical barrier then you should be splitting the carriageway.
