A while ago, Unlimited and I started a conversation based on a UR submitted about the correct naming of this segment . My view is that it should be Spring Garden St. Unlimited contends that it should be E Eakins Oval. Based on Voludu’s suggestion, I’ve moved this conversation into the forum. Below is some of the back and forth between Unlimited and I, as well as some input from the GHO:
Kraz31:
Philadelphia GIS lists that road as Spring Garden (see screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/66ijbtQ.png ). Additionally, if you look at the street view you sent me, you can see it also says Spring Garden in blue. It also doesn’t logically make sense to have a branch from the oval be named the same as to Oval (not to mention that it’s confusing). That street is where Spring Garden begins.
GIS also lists all of Eakins Oval as the Ben Franklin (because it is all actually part of the Ben Franklin), but the logical thing would be to have all parts of the Oval named as of the oval (and most parts are).
unlimited1808:
The blue bar with Spring Garden isn’t naming that segment as Spring Garden. There’s a right arrow to the right indicating Spring Garden is that way. I’m more inclined to name it what the signs say over GIS, when there is a clearly visible sign. This extension is E Eakins Oval, not just Eakins Oval, like the actual oval is named. While named similarly, we can’t fix poor naming by the City.
The segments are named in order to provide proper (as best as we can) instructions. While the entire Oval isn’t named BFP or Eakins, it works with the signs that are there.
Kraz31:
I’m going to continue to disagree on this one. Editors have some level of discretion when it comes to naming and ensure Waze gives proper directions. Waze telling drivers to stay right to Eakins Oval when a) they’re already on Eakins Oval and b) Eakins Oval is to the left makes no sense.
If you look at OpenMaps or GMaps, that section is called Art Museum Dr (which is clearly wrong).
unlimited1808:
The instructions are stay left to Eakins Oval or stay right to East Eakins Oval. The signs are there are the intersection. Not Waze’s fault that’s the name the City chose to put on the sign. What OpenMap, Google Maps, os GIS have are irrelevant in this case. The sign is what’s there in the real world.
Kraz31:
The directions don’t make sense when driving in the other direction either. If driving up the Ben Franklin toward the art museum, and you need to keep right towards Spring Garden then Waze tells you to keep right towards E Eakins Oval, even though you’re headed away from the Oval.
unlimited1808:
From BFP northbound, the only instruction is stay right or turn right to E Eakins Oval, which agrees with the signs. Stay/turn is dependent on which lanes of BFP your in. Continuing on BFP is the best continuation and instruction is suppressed.
At the next fork, you get stay left to Eakins Oval and stay right to Kelly Drive.
I feel like you keep arguing E Eakins Oval is the same as Eakins Oval. It’s not. There’s a difference. It’s East. Like I said, I agree it is a poor choice of names. East and Eakins even sound alike, especially when put together in East Eakins. We can’t fix bad signage and a poor choice of names.
Input is greatly appreciated from all, although I imagine this will ultimately up to the SMs.
Also, I hope Unlimited doesn’t hate me by the end of this for not letting it go.
