Hi everyone,
We’re sharing an exciting update as part of our ongoing effort to strengthen the Waze and Google Maps ecosystem through mutual data sharing and hyper-local insights.
Starting today, Google Maps will begin surfacing alerts for Permanent Speed Cameras directly sourced from your mapping in WME.
Maximizing the Impact of Your High-Quality Mapping
Our goal is to ensure the high-quality data you curate is benefiting the entire ecosystem, helping even more drivers stay informed and safe on the road.
Building on our vision from July 2024, we are taking our partnership with Google Maps to the next level. By surfacing Waze-mapped cameras on Google Maps, we maximize the impact of our incredible editors community. This ensures that the most accurate, community-sourced information leads the way, providing drivers with essential insights wherever they are.
Launch Details
We are taking a phased approach to ensure a smooth integration across platforms:
- Starting Today: We are starting with surfacing Waze-sourced Permanent Speed Cameras alerts. This will roll out first in the US, Australia, and the Netherlands, followed by a global rollout shortly after.
- Later This Year: We will expand the scope to include additional types, such as Red Light Cameras and Combination Red Light and Speed Cameras.
Strengthening the Ecosystem
This cross-data sharing is a two-way street. Bringing your WME-mapped cameras to Google Maps extends the reach of your expertise to millions of new drivers, while the Waze community and drivers also benefit from other data-sharing initiatives. From advanced tools and unprecedented access for editors, such as ‘The Button’ and ‘Project Biggs’, to enhanced Map Data for Waze drivers (such as gas prices feeds), this partnership brings significant value back to the entire ecosystem, with even more exciting collaborations planned.
This milestone reinforces the trust we have in our editor community, to deliver the highest quality data to users worldwide. This trust has been rightfully earned through years of close partnership with you, and we’re incredibly proud to see it extend even further across Google. As such collaborations expand, we have no doubt that this trust will continue to deepen.
Even as we collaborate on data, we remain fully committed to preserving Waze’s unique identity and hyper-local focus. We recently launched new Permanent Hazards in Beta, with even more local hazard types lined up for later this year. This continuous innovation ensures that Waze remains the distinct, community-driven app we all love, even as we build a stronger mapping network together.
Thank you for being our partners as we reach this milestone together!
Best,
Danit, On behalf of the Waze Communities Team
