Europe / Netherlands & Belgium

Okay, I found this fun (and in the future useful) app in the store, and I started recording a Dutch/Belgian map today.

They didn’t (yet) turn up in the cartouche though, so you can’t see my progress. Hold on :).

A small part of the roads I mapped appeared in Waze today:
http://www.waze.com/livemap/?zoom=8&lat=6586461.82133&lon=636794.93061&layers=BTTTT

Now I have to figure out cartouche  .

PS: I mapped a lot more roads (but probably didn’t have an ‘live’ dataconnection then, since I was travelling abroad). Will they appear later or can you only map roads when you have a ‘live’ dataconnection? That would be really bad in Europe, where you often cross borders (dataroaming is expensive), and in the Netherlands the exclusive iPhone carrier has flaky 3G at best.

You can check the drives you’ve made in the archive and if they are there, you can create the roads based on the details there (there is a create road option there).

Fej, have a look here:
http://www.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=8&lat=50.83563&lon=5.69746&layers=BFFTFFFFFFFFFTTFFTTTTT

I traveled from northwest to southeast. I probably lost my cell phone network connectivity between the ‘Bischopsingel’ and the ‘Oeslingerbaan’. While the data is on my phone (iPhone), I can’t see it on the map. It looks like data goes missing once cell phone network connectivity is lost. I can see that data on my iPhone though. I did a lot of datamining while driving around without a working dataconnection, it would really be unfortunate if that is lost.

I also see a lot of 0.0 mile trips in my archive, is it possible to filter them out?

Indeed interesting and I’ll check what we can do to. Sounds a bit strange that the information is on the phone but not in the archive.
“0.0 miles trip” does not necessarily mean that there is nothing in the file, rather that the nightly process could not create a road from it. I advise you look at the files to see if there is additional data you can use. We will be adding a delete option to remove archive items that there is no interest in keeping.

This is what is on my iPhone (all roads appear in red on my iPhone):

The blue dot is next to the ‘Beenteplein’ (just below ‘Oeslingerbaan’), if you click on the link above.

So you can see there is a huge difference from what I see on my phone and what is available in cartouche.

Hi Robin,

The difference you see is something we’re aware of. In general, the changes on the cartouche are immediate, and then once a day they go into the live map (used for the map on the site, as well as the map tiles sent to your phone).
While in the US this all runs on a daily basis, we are still trying to bring the same standard to maps that wazers are creating all over the world, but not there yet.
Another thing, to make sure you are getting the latest maps sent to your waze (i.e. verify that waze is not using the cached tiles) you need to either navigate to an address or choose to show it on map. Once you enter street address to the cartouche, this process will be much easier.

I saw that you guys were discussing connecting the maps of two different areas and I think you are doing a great job. I can’t wait for my next visit in the Netherlands where I could test out your maps!!

Yes, I’m aware of the slight delay in the live map. That’s not a big issue, since I’m not using waze for navigation yet (not yet usable with just a few roads in the Netherlands).

So if I understand you correctly, the roads should show up in cartouche immediately when I trace them with my phone? They are not showing up, even in cartouche, I’m missing parts from the same trace (probably where I lost connection with the GSM network), they appear in red on my phone though. Actually I’m missing like 80%-90% of my traces, so that’s a lot of data lost for me (and you :D).

About the address comment: the roads I have named don’t yet show up in the search results, so I can’t yet search them. I guess that also needs some time, no big problem. I can already search for ‘Bergamo, Italy’, so I guess it will work itself out.

My 2 cents:
Try to turn on GPS Points in cartouche, and see if there is any in the area where the road should be.
If there aren’t even gps points, then you’ll know that all the data is really missing.

GPS points aren’t there as well :(. Another thing I noticed, they aren’t even showing in the my dashboard :(.

Roads do not appear immediately in the Cartouche. It takes +/- 24 hours to merge them into the map (this is the nightly process).

Okay. I travelled about 800kms from thu-sat while waze’ng. Of that 800km, about 10% (+/- 55miles) is showing up in cartouche/dashboard. My sunday drive hasn’t shown up at all, but that might be the delay then.

Anyway, I removed waze from my iPhone and iTunes, and then reinstalled it. I lost all roads I recorded (as expected), and I’ll try to trace them again.

Thanks for the new version of cartouche btw. Much better, love the cityname as well as the streetname autocompletion. Also the 0.0 mile trips have been removed (which I complained about in an earlier post). Only thing is now I can’t delete roads (just nothing happens), and adding a new city results in ‘Server error.’, while adding streetnames works.

Is there any way to get hold of the beta for the iPhone btw (non-jailbreak phone)? I’m willing to check if that fixes my disappearing routes.

Also, how can I delete intersections? I made a big mess at:
http://www.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=4&lat=50.78249&lon=5.72552&layers=BFFTFFFFFFFFFTTFFTTTTT&seg-1=57623104&seg-2=57622899

I would like to remove the intersections alongside the roads, and some intersections on the roads (there are none). I tried ‘connecting’ the segments, but this does not remove the intersection itself, I don’t know why it generated that much intersections over there.

They should be just a visual glitch, they’re not really considered intersections (you can move them around, without actually moving the road). The system is supposed to get rid of those during the night process… but it never worked for me, I have tons of fake intersections everywhere.

Thank you, I figured it out.
I think we need a FAQ or something:

Removing an intersection where there is none in reality:
- Select the first road (by clicking it).

 • Select the second road (by clicking it, while holding the CTRL-key).
 • Select ‘Connect roads by order of selection’
 • Select the first and second road again.
 • Click ‘Bridge above mutual node’ and confirm.
 • You can now move the intersection (sometimes there are more) out of the way by selecting and moving it.
 • They will be garbage-collected (removed) during nightly scripts.

Will check the fake intersection still remaining in the map - they should (and are in most cases) removed and if they are remaining, we need fix that.
We have a small problem yesterday with the nightly process hence only part of the routes were merged into the maps - we are correcting it and it should work in today’s nightly job and be available tomorrow.

Hi guys,

I’m new since only yesterday found yhe app in the app store installed it and recorded all day. On different roads i live in brabant near Eindhoven but have to travel a lot for work. If i’m right then it will take 24-48 hours before my wazed route is on the cartouche and i can start editing. I hope i can help lot to make this work in the netherlands.

regards,

Alex van Roij

Alex, welkom!
Somebody is already active in the Eindhoven area I have noticed:
http://www.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=0&lat=51.42341&lon=5.43484&layers=BFFTFFFFFFFFFFTFTTTTTT&seg-1=57619922
That seems to be the A2/A67, needs some work though :).

OK, found out the problem with my missing routes/traces after some extensive testing:
When I either start and/or end a route without a data connection, the whole route is lost. They are in my iPhone (red lines), but do not appear in cartouche/dashboard ever (this is probably a huge bug/overlook in the iPhone app). Is there any way to resubmit your driven routes (maybe a suggestion for the next version - force synchronize or something, maybe only when you are on wifi?)?

Couple more bugs in the new cartouche:

 • Can’t delete roads
 • It won’t let me create roads from the yellow traces in rm_12_09_09_144276597_5720.gpx

 • Creating a street name when multiple roads selected results in ‘Server error’.
 • Creating a street name results in 2 streets (with the same name) created.
