Exceeding speed limit "blip" when driving past a turnoff

Howdy all. I have a question about how to handle an issue I have when driving. On US Highway 264 West, there’s a spot where, when I pass through it, I very briefly get an alert that I am going more than 5 mph over the speed limit. The speed limit is 60 mph, no question of it. I only get this alert when in the left-hand lane, not the right, and from checking the map editor, the alert happens right as I pass a turnoff into the median for drivers to turn left onto a road that would have a lower speed limit. Looking briefly over comparable turnoffs on this stretch, these seem to normally have no speed limit set in them, while the turnoff I’m referring to has a speed limit set in Waze of 45 mph. It seems pretty obvious that the speed limit set for this turnoff is what’s mistakenly setting off my speed limit alert. Should the speed limit be removed for this section to eliminate this erroneous alert? There is no posted sign indicating what it should be, but it’s a short section like the others I pass on this highway. I can provide more specifics of the exact location if needed. Thanx!

Hey there, I’m happy to take a look at the issue. Can you send us a permalink and/or describe the location?

Thanks.

Certainly! Let me try this. The segment ID is 540499262. A good landmark reference is 6055 US Hwy 264 West, Washington NC. This is the address for a business located right there. The intersection is to Voa Road. I have the errant message pop up only when traveling east.

Thank you for the reply. Another fellow editor removed the speed limit from the turn lane at that intersection. Waze will now change the speed limit only for drivers who are routed to turn left or make a U-turn at the intersection. Please let us know if you continue to see issues there, and we’ll take a deeper dive.

Thanks again for helping improve the map

Howdy, yes I can confirm that I no longer get this exceeding speed limit “blip” there any longer. I did notice something my past two drives though right there that I didn’t notice before, but would explain why the issue was occurring. As I drive past that turnoff, my map orientation starts to rotate as if I was merging into that turnoff, then straightens back out as I pass it completely. Looking over the map editor again, I see the problem. The turnoff right here on the side traveling east looks like it merges/overlaps with the main road for a short bit. In comparison, the turnoff on the opposing side has a more distinct separation. I don’t think this has a practical effect on navigation, so may not be worth messing with unless we want to be as accurate as can be. I noticed it at least once traveling west as well once I caught on to this.

I did twice yesterday while driving this stretch experience notifications again of exceeding the speed limit when I shouldn’t have and have not before in those areas, but I need to do a couple more passes on driving to be sure it wasn’t me. At least once I was changing lanes from left to right and may have been bordering on the 5mph threshold. I do know about where this happened each time so this will be easy to recheck. I’ve also noticed that going westward, near the end of this same highway where the speed limit changes from 60 to 55, the posted sign appears to be well in advance of where Waze marks the spot. I’ll recheck on upcoming drives and see if I can confirm and narrow down the correct location.

Alrighty, I did a drive through today and did not get a repeat of those other “blips” that I mentioned in my last reply, so I’m confident that was just a fluke based on being just on the cusp of my alert threshold and my cruise control adjusting, or something to that effect.

I was able to confirm that the speed limit change on the west-most end of the highway is off. It’s actually off in both directions. So going westward, I used my travel odometer and traveled 0.2 miles from the time I passed the speed limit sign for “55” before Waze displayed the change from 60 to 55. Likewise, there’s a comparable error going eastward. I wasn’t able to get a distance, but what happens is the speed limit starts off as 55, then Waze shows the limit as 60 well before an actual sign shows the new speed limit. I would guess it’s about the same distance. I just checked using Google Streeview, and their most recent recording was just 2 months ago, so this would be current. Google Maps shows the 55 mph sign at the address of roughly 4001 US-264 (right between 4001 and 3999 actually, west-bound lane). On the opposite side, I can see the 60 mph sign for the east-bound lane directly across from this one. I’ll post a link below to Google’s Streetview to help with the reference.

I believe there was a comparable discrepancy on the far east side of the highway, but it will be a few days before I can double check on this.
