Exit numbers (primarily on Highway 1 and Highway 2)

I have a fairly comprehensive list of exit numbers for Highways 1 and 2, from the AB/BC border to Calgary and from about Carstairs to the junction with Highway 3, respectively. Is there a desire to see these exit numbers on the ramps?

I notice that the ramps at least in my area are locked to L5, so I’d have to either get them unlocked or just give the list to someone with that level or better. I’m cool with either, if the desire is there to make use of the data.

Sounds great! Let’s work together on this… Get me permalinks to a few interchanges, then I’ll reduce the lock for you to edit.

Note preferred format:
Exit 123: Destination 1 / Destination 2 / …

N.b. Destinations should be listed in the order they appear on the last sign before the exit.

I found after I posted that, that my file with all the exits is on a drive I left in my office, and with today being a holiday, I can’t get to it until tomorrow morning.

So just wanted to say I’m not ignoring this post (after I made it) but it’ll take me a bit of time to get back to it.

Ok, a large amount of the ones I had are already done, and I did a few more which were already unlocked, but these ones I need help on.

This is Exit 285A (locked to 4).

This one is Exit 285B (also locked to 4).

And this one is Exit 285 (again, L4).

All three of the above just need the exit number - the rest of the text is already done.

Here is Exit 227. I already did the opposite direction, but this side of the interchange is juuuuuust outside my editing area.

This one and its companion here for the opposite direction are “Exit 124: to Ozada Rd”. Again, outside my editing area (for now, until I do a drive).

Lastly, this is “Exit 202: to Mazeppa / Gas Plant” (out of my area).

I’ll work on the Stoney ramps (getting their exit numbers etc) over the next few days.

I was able to take care of these ones. Can’t do much about the level 4 locks, though. :x I don’t see why any of those need to be locked that high.

Thanks for tracking down the numbers!

Well the others are done, too!

Once we have a Level 4 editor active primarily in Calgary, I’ll be suggesting the same thing there that we have set in Edmonton – Freeways and Ramps are all Rank 4 or higher.

Also, when we go to self-management, Level 3 will mean a lot more and I could see lowering more locks to that level. Right now, all it takes is filling out a form to request AM access and you’ll get Level 3 and the area…

Indeed… incredibly frustrating. The maps in the Calgary area are so mature that there really isn’t much to do on a daily basis, meaning I can’t see somebody starting out now ever getting the edits required for level 4, never mind 5. Just came along a little too late, I suppose. Must have been easy when the maps were in their infancy.

Well, one solution is to find a less-frequented area (e.g. Wainwright, AB or Prince Albert, SK) and request AM privs for it.

Some of these cities got basemap imports with street names like “16 Avenue North-west” – with some time, a person can get a lot of edits by simply fixing these to the normal “16 Ave NW”. This improves the map greatly, while also helping towards the advancement.

We’ve had an unofficial stance of promoting people to “Province Manager” with rank 4 – erablian and invented are two examples of that… they have full access to Alberta and Ontario (respectively), which gives them plenty of space to work on to get to rank 5.

I’m doing my best to keep them from raising the bar further – there is talk about it, but I don’t believe it will benefit the community… mostly in that there won’t be any way for new editors to advance without cheating.

Yup, already doing the things you mentioned. Drops in the bucket, though.

I’m sure everyone’s trying to make the best of an imperfect system. Raising the edit count bar will simply make the people who are interested in “cheating” do so even more. They’ll be hard-pressed to find a solution that doesn’t favor people who game the system, and early adopters. Oh well; that’s life.

I hadn’t contemplated going for other areas. I come from being frustrated one too many times by the admins at Google Map Maker (getting in a row with someone in India over them saying that they knew that “Mount Kidd RV Park” was really, truly 40km southwest of Mount Kidd and that I was in the wrong, so they rejected my changes)… which kept me in the line of thinking that I’m not welcome to do edits in areas I’m not geographically close to.

However, I grew up in an area of southern Ontario, knowing it backwards and forwards, and I spend a good portion of each September driving all over the eastern half of Newfoundland. So to hear you guys tell it, I could theoretically become Area Manager in those regions.

I’m hoping I’m not annoying the group that reviews area managers for Alberta - I am trying to expand my area(s) to the areas I have firsthand knowledge of, but it’s difficult a small window at a time, and to boot, I’m managing to leave little slivers (a half-mile or so wide and a few miles tall, or vice versa) where I somehow didn’t make the areas overlap when I requested them. It’s like trying to cover a map with a cookie cutter!

You could certainly apply for AM in those areas!

At the moment, AM applications are handled by Waze staff… so don’t worry about putting in too many. They don’t seem to audit the requests too much, so you can just submit what you want and it will likely be approved.

Before anybody panics … I did about a half-dozen URs along Stoney tonight as a means of recording the exit numbers. So don’t flip out if/when the URs eventually show up (for some reason, that drive is not showing up yet).

The exit numbers are done on SE Stoney.

Someone named ‘canusracing’ started closing my reports this morning before I could get to them, and they don’t show up in the forum so I couldn’t PM them. Despite that, I still managed to salvage the info and put it on the exits. (They marked the URs as “solved” and closed them without comment, even though the exit numbers hadn’t been applied to the exits yet.)

Is there another way to get hold of somebody doing this kind of thing, in case it happens again? As I said above, I tried PMing that username in the forums here through Tapatalk (I was enroute to work and didn’t have a PC to get to the map editor with), but that username doesn’t exist on the forums.

I’ll see about getting their username force-created.

On second glance, I can add them to a PM – perhaps try from your PC? It could be Tapatalk was being weird…

Hah - he joined (the forums) at 7:05… I tried to PM him at 6:43 (when he was closing my URs). I wouldn’t put it past Tapatalk to be screwy, but it looks like it was just bad timing.

In any case, no real harm done - canusracing, if you’re reading this, I didn’t mean to vilify you. Welcome to the team
