Falcon Map Raid

We are excited to announce the Falcon Map Raid!
The Falcon Map Raid is part of a worldwide project to improve the Waze map, in preparation for the Falcon Snapper (read more below).
Background:
As an app user drives along a route, the arrow in the Waze app depicts the user’s location on the Waze map. A technology, previously called the matcher, “snaps” the arrow to a segment on the map on the route. Waze is launching a new feature called the Falcon Snapper, already live on Android and in beta for iOS. The new snapper is next generational – it is smarter and more predictive. To fully enable the new snapper, we need to make changes to our mapping standards and the Waze map.
Who can participate?
The United States Falcon Map Raid is open to all U.S. editors Rank 2 and above. It is important that we have editors who understand the basics. You must also be a strong communicator with a proven ability to work as a part of a team.
When can we get started?
The Falcon Map Raid is tentatively scheduled for a length of 30 days, between Friday, November 20 and Sunday, December 20, 2020. Please, do not start working on Falcon map improvements until the raid, otherwise the data provided by Waze HQ for the raid may be inaccurate and your efforts won’t count towards the Hall of Fame.
Why should I join?
Map raids are an excellent opportunity to work with your fellow editors, improve the map, and grow your editing skills by working on a strategic, common goal. Edits are also tallied up, and you have a chance to have your name forever listed in the Map Raid Hall of Fame.
How do I participate?

First dumb question: When answering URs or adding new streets, I typically nudge attached or nearby streets and/or simplify them - What specifically should we avoid doing, geometry-wise?

Those kinds of minor changes are absolutely fine. Mostly we are talking about major changes to freeways and intersections, or the dividing of roads.

Hopefully we can avoid tile delays during the mapraid since soooooo many segments are potentially going to be touched! #fingerscrossed

Can we get some more specific guidance as to what it is exactly we are looking for that is a problem, and what we should be planning on doing to fix it? Are we talking fixing really egregious alignments, and if so how precise do we need to be? What are the new conditions that warrant dividing a road? Etc…

If we knew more precisely what the problems and fixes were, we could be doing them already, we aren’t confined to the constraints of a MapRaid schedule.

I would say pre-raid fixes are discouraged so the data from staff is accurate. I’m sure that there will be a wiki for the raid explaining everything as we get closer and you will have ample time to digest the information before editing.

Essentially there are areas where freeways, major highways, etc. are drawn on the shoulder or the right lane of a 4 lane segment (or even off the pavement). The new snapper does not like this. Same with a wide road that is currently undivided. But the specific guidance is still being worked out as far as I know, so we shouldn’t work too far ahead.

Technically, I don’t think there are actually any new conditions, just removing the “if it ain’t broke don’t divide it” mindset.

OK, these help… we’re just making people are aware this is up and coming even though what all it is we are doing is known in a general way but isn’t quite ironed out? OK.

Thanks,

Sounds about right

For anyone that signs up, we’re adding you to two channels on the USA Discord server. If you don’t see a “FALCON MAP RAID” group with #falcon-raid-announcements and #falcon-raid-lobby within about a day, please let me know or post here. We’re adding people throughout the day as we see sign-ups, so it might take a few hours, but as of right now we’re caught up.

I dont think I see it. I’m looking in Waze USA and Waze Global & MR servers.

I don’t see where you signed up?

lol… I was gathering info to see what it was about. I see the info about the GPS tracks but it still doesnt click [“snap?” ] in my brain because from what I’ve seen of GPS tracks they are ALL OVER the place. but I’m probably thinking of something else. I’ll submit my app now.

The first post doesn’t say it, but the role to see the channels doesn’t get added until after you sign up.

I don’t see the Discord groups. Can you add me?

I see you in the Falcon Lobby on the Waze USA server. Are you not seeing that?

The actual groups and their channels have not been created yet, if that is what you are looking for.

Groups posted today on Discord #falcon-raid-announcements
