Farrington Hwy

So I was looking at this UR to see what was up with U turns there and realized it doesn’t allow because of the road being divided. Does this section of Farrington Hwy meet Wiki requirements to be undivided? Or should it be brought together like this intersection?

Take a look at that thread. Waze is currently lacking in any U-turn instruction. Toward the bottom of the page, Alan links to a list of feature requests, including U-turn directions, so apparently Waze is working on it.

The way it is now, the only way it directs you to make a U-turn is to say “turn left on X” and then “turn left on X” again. A lot of people are confused by that because they (correctly) assume they’d be prompted to make a U-turn.

Where U-turns are allowed on divided highways, you usually see a “box” type intersection in the UR. If you look at Street View there, you can see signs allowing U-turns.

When intersections are pinched into what we call a “bow tie,” that signals that U-turns are probably prohibited. The bow tie formation allows traffic to cross through the intersection but not to make the U.

As for whether Farrington should be divided like that according to the Wiki: Probably not, but heck, the rail’s coming through there now (and eventually Kamehameha Hwy), so might as well leave it divided.

And there are other forum discussion about how to not get u-turns (left-left)… https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=276&t=108731

apparently there is code in app to determine a u-turn at a left-left or a bowtie. The reason for the bowtie is to restrict u-turn instead of allowing it.

U-turn instruction at a bowtie is a new thing (and I have not seen what the angle is to get the u-turn instruction at a bowtie (not that I like bowties…)

Do you suggest that we make all split intersections bowtie to force the u turn prompt, jemay?

Well, not really necessary… the left and left still will do the same thing, not as clean as a u-turn. so which of the two issues do you want to see? the left left or bowtie?

Note: there is a length and angle to make sure u-turn (left left) is allowed vs not allowed.

Ah. Was unaware of the angle setting required, in addition to < 15m length. If that works, that would look better than a bowtie.
