Fethard (Tipp) City Name

Hi,

Searching the osi map there appears to be only one Fethard in Ireland and one Fethard-on-Sea.

I am going to bet that Fethard on Sea (Fethard-on-Sea) is named Fethard.

This would explain why I cannot rename Fethard (Tipperary) to Fethard (Which is what it’s name is… )

Hi Des,

As you mentioned it, there are 2 Fethard:

  • Co. Tipperary: Fethard (Wikipedia, Permalink, Geohack)
  • Co. Wexford: Fethard-on-Sea or Fethard (Wikipedia, Permalink, Geohack)
I would suggest that we rename Fethard (Tipperary) to Fethard probably via this form after the addition of county field in Ireland by Waze. A request has been submitted (months ago). They “are creating” it…
We would need to do it for other “duplicate cities” too.

We have another means of renaming cities too, although it’s possible that this means and the one you just posted a link to feed into the same mechanism.

Anyway, I’d agree with leaving this renaming until we get counties. It’s time I poked them again to see how that’s getting on; watch this space…

EDIT: I’ve just sent a question to Waze HQ asking when they’re likely to start the process of setting up counties/states for Ireland. The last time was in November, when they said it’d take some time, but that they would let us know when it started. They said they were doing it on a country-by-country basis, so I’m guessing there’s a long queue involved.

How do we proceed? A form or a shared spreadsheet to fill in?
Who can request the change? Any editors?

Well, we needn’t proceed until we have counties in place.

However, the mechanism I’m referring to is similar to the mechanism we have for approving area manager applications (it’s a shared spreadsheet), so it’s only available to country admins. I haven’t used it yet, but it doesn’t look too fiddly.

Alright - I’ve just got an update from HQ about counties; apparently it’s going to take “at least 6 months”, and it is a process that takes time.

Does this change our opinions about naming for Fethard? If we think it’s a significant issue, we can rename these two cities, but if we think it’s not the end of the world, then we can leave it for a few months.

I don’t think it’s especially serious, but opinions may vary.

Hi,

I was just pointing this out, and know what the fix would be. Largest town gets the name and smaller one(s) get name (county).

I suspect the larger of the towns was mapped later due to the diabolical nature of the google imagery previously as this is near a still diabolical section!

I am sure it can wait…

Not the end of the world. Let’s wait and see…
