Finding new road names on New Estates?

Hi,

I’ve been asked by a UR to add in a missing road, which was on a new estate. I found the details about the new estate on on a website and it neatly matched up with the Satellite image. So I added the roads and I went to add in the rest of the street names but I couldn’t find them anywhere?

Is there a place you can go to find them? Or do you just leave the street name off so it has the red edges? Looking at the Uk wiki, it looks like what I’m supposed to do.

Also I’ve seen people add estates as a construction site with the name as the estate. Is this standard practice?

You shouldn’t leave the road red - that’s a cardinal sin!

If you can’t find the road name, tick the “no name” box and - if a city name isn’t relevant, the “no city” box.

Builder’s site plans rarely include road names - often the names haven’t been decided on when the plans are drawn; they may need approval by the local authority; or the local authority may not decide on them until the build is complete.

There are a couple of good sources you can use. The first is Google Street View imagery, but that only helps if there is recent footage.

The other good source can be obtained using Twister-UK’s WMEOpenData script. Ordnance Survey publish OpenData - a freely-available dataset that includes road names and locations. The WMEOpenData script utilises this database to “map” available roadnames into the editor and lets you apply them directly to segments. This can still not always work for new builds, as OpenData is only updated once or twice a year, but Twister-UK is always very prompt at updating the script when OpenData updates.

As a cautionary note, there are some places you cannot get road names from. Copying road names from Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, or any other external map service is not allowed. Whilst the existence of road names is public knowledge, the effort made by mapping services to match the road names to their maps is considered a creative work and is therefore subject to copyright. Plus, to be honest, they don’t always get it right!

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I’ve ticked them all as “no name”. It just said in the global wiki https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/Global/Best_map_editing_practice#New_Roads “At least if the road is red, then someone else knows that it needs work.” but I understand UK is different.

Also should I add new estates as a construction site with the name as the estate?

I do this, have never seen anything official. As I’m a Civil Engineer who builds these new developments most prospective new owners visit when they are still being built and are known by their development name. By Area mapping the development and using it’s name people can navigate to it. It also helps to explain the random new roads across open fields

I also add the developers website to the Place so others can verify or add if additional phases are required.
