Functional Class Status and To-Do List - SC Editors Needed!

The new FC maps are out! Yay!

First off, what is functional class? Functional class is road type. See the wiki here for the national standard, and be aware of rules specific to South Carolina here.

The following is a list of changes yet to be made in order to have the map completed to this standard.

To easily find and navigate to each of these spots to quickly make the correction (if it’s in your editable area), then simply look in the following directory:

https://waze.slack.com/files/thortok2000_4

(You can also easily find them in the slack desktop app through various methods. I actually recommend using the desktop app if possible instead of the web browser.)

Note that you will need to be a member of our slack in order to view these, but you should be a member of our slack anyway. =P

Each ‘file’ contains a picture of the reference map, instruction on what road types need to be changed, and in the comments a permalink to take you right to the spot. I couldn’t make it any easier for you!

While you’re there, also check for other routing issues. The main issues with routing are turn restrictions, and roads connected to the one you’re changing the type of either not existing, mapped incorrectly, or not yet having their direction set to two-way. How much work you want to do ‘near’ the road you’re changing is up to you, but at least fix every segment directly connected to a segment of Primary Street or higher (that you touch.)

We want all roads Primary Street or higher, and their immediately directly connecting segments they touch, to be mapped cleanly and accurately. Simply changing road type and road type alone doesn’t help nearly as much. A turn restriction for instance can make the road never used in the first place; these details matter!

Additional edits you can make in addition to routing issues include naming it and locking it to the standard set in the SC wiki. And in general, it’s very strongly recommended to fix any and all other issues within your ability, and anything else you know how to do as well. Validator is a great help with recognizing issues to be fixed as you go along.

Assuming you use Google Chrome, these are the recommended extensions and scripts to have installed while you’re doing this, to catch any other issues along the way:

WME Validator
Tampermonkey

Once you have Tampermonkey you can install these scripts:

SC Counties Overlay
SC Validator Plugin

When you have finished making your edits and the affected area is now fully typed correctly, comment on the file. I will double-check it and when I confirm that it has been done, the file will be deleted. This means all visible files still need attention!

If you are only able to get some of the segments that need changing and not all of them, that’s fine. Go ahead and do it. There’s no need to comment on the file unless there is a question, or it is done and ready for a final check. This helps reduce spam in the channel. If there’s only a couple segments left that you can’t get, though, adding an updated permalink to make it easier for the next editor is perfectly okay.

The list below is more for record keeping about when each area has been completed, as well as include links to the reference maps if needed. The files in the slack list should be all you need to get started.

If for some reason you want to disagree with or override my review of changes that need to be made, you are required to get it approved by a State or Country Manager. You do not have permission to override otherwise. We’re keeping a record of areas that are not mapped to the standard. (You can find this list here.) Otherwise I will continue to have it on this to-do list as needing correction! Of course, if you think I’ve simply read the map wrong or something, just comment on the file. I might have. =P

Certain counties have a higher priority than others. I will be adding tier 1 to this list before tier 2, etc. See this list. To that end, the counties will be listed by tier first, and then alphabetically.

If you have any questions about any of this, you’re welcome to contact me (or any of the senior editors in SC) and ask! Let’s get this done, and happy editing to you!

Yeesh dude, you might want to wait until we have our new maps! XD

Eh, I suppose I can. I was mostly looking for the easiest way to handle areas I can’t edit, and this seems to be the best option. I’ll edit this when the new maps come out. =D

Fair enough. I did Aiken FC, and I made some alterations to PS’s where I felt it was appropriate. I will follow a bit more closely to the new maps though since they aren’t out of date. You’ll notice the same is true for Richland & Lexington Counties, which are also my handiwork. As for the road south of SC-113, that was an executive decision meant to provide a highway serving the area in a N-S fashion; as it stood my trip to the Barnwell area was 10 minutes longer because roads south and north of 113 were PS and so wouldn’t route long-distance. I have driven it several times and all the roads on it are similar to highway standards.

I will also note that langford and I will be covering the whole state FC as we can. I will also be maintaining the to-do list on the wiki to help keep track of what still needs doing. I’m sure there’s something else we can do to help make it easier to know which editors can edit in each county so we don’t have to keep double checking everything.

Well, I shall review your work, then!

Lately my job has been sending me all over so I have a sizable editable area, some of it is in NC and GA though. Other than UR’s, I’m focusing exclusively on SC.

The new maps are out, pay attention to the original post for updates!

Abbeville County and Abbeville City have been reviewed and are in need of an editor to complete.

Is there any reason we aren’t going through the FC and verifying and fixing road names and validating roads while we are doing FC? It is a good opportunity to recheck on that information.

One type of change affects routing, one doesn’t. My personal style is to do the major things that affect routing first, then go back and clean all the more visual or (relatively) unimportant errors like names.

Verifying road names would also probably be done better with GIS maps rather than FC maps. Right? And I personally prefer to refer to one type of map at a time, do all the area, then the next type of map, do all the area, etc.

And as far as this particular forum post goes, I was starting to mention when names should be updated, corrected or fixed, and the forum post was 5 times longer. So I’ll leave that to the editor that updates the FC to identify and make those changes.

Spartanburg County has been reviewed and added to the todo list!

Almost taken care of adding Anderson to the todo list. Rural is reviewed, and sheet 1, working my way through sheet 2.

Yay for a mapraid!

Since Dillon, Marion and Horry counties were the ones that overlapped with group 10, those have been added to the todo list for areas outside of 10’s area. 10’s area should be good, though.

New method including pictures and permalinks via using slack! Details in the OP.
